Default Changing an Air-Con Compressor?

Not actually on a Scooby but I guess they're all much the same so I'll post here for advice.

It's on the wife's Mitsubishi Colt, the air-con stopped working a while back, got the garage to have a look and they re-gassed it. Worked for a while but packed up again and as they had put dye in the gas it was diagnosed as a leaking compressor. Quoted over £500 for a new one, car it probably worth £1500 at best but it's the only thing wrong with it.

So how difficult are they to change? Can get one from a breakers (eBay) for less than £100. Thinking to swap it over then take it somewhere to get it gassed. Do you need special tools and such? I guess the system would need some sort of pressure test before re-gassing?

Cheers.

generally easy to change over.
but system must be evacuated first.
highly illegal to just vent off any refrigerant left.
the system will be vacuum and pessure tested by whoever regasses.
they legally have to test system is gas tight before recharging.

I very much doubt there is any refrigerant left in it but if I do go ahead I'll be sure to get it evacuated first

No special tools required, if its had a leak then its a straight forward swap as long as all the gas has escaped, once the new compressor is fitted do a quick vacuum of the system then recharge
