Rust
Guess what car has rust.....a good old impreza
Found out today my boot has 3 nice leaks so its full of water, so stripped it all out as you do and noticed the gap between my outer arch and inner liner? has slight surface rust. It's got a bead of seam sealer along it which has come off basically. I know this is a common problem but how could I go about saving this before it attacks my arches....Pull the seam seal out and cover in rust treatment then reseal?
I have no rust under the arch or outside its just in this little seam on each side of the car.

I think cutting it out would be the wrong move to make, especially on mine which looks to be surface rust. Il put some pictures up in a mo.

Yep all the same as every other one I have seen. Same places same reasons. Only way to properly treat that is to start cutting bodywork away. If you want to see how bad it gets google image it and you will see some (especially in the US) where after cutting the wing out is just all rust behind there.

My plan is going to be remove the seam seal, sand out as much of the rust as possible and then cover in rust converter. Re seam-seal and then cover it with underseal.
Had a good luck under my arches earlier and I have surface rust there too, so will be the same order with that.
I'm hoping to get this rust gone without touching paintwork + it will be a shame for another Subaru to end up at the breakers.

Are you going to waxoyl inside the car and under the arches?

on the inner arches. Then my plan is to rustproof as much of the interior
sections as I can get to.

I don't wish to put a downer on it but that won't stop it. It may slow it down a bit but it will continue to rot. No matter what you do to rust it keeps going ever if you can't see it. Believe me I have tried everything over the years. It's like car cancer, you need to cut it out.

This is just a pain to get into to do anything good with it.
Good thing is this is now dry instead of soaking under a wet seal all day lol.

Been abit busy with work but I found the hole today, I think this is the start of the rust. Its right under the arch just above the bolt that holds the bumper on.
Sorry for blurry pic, the sun was making it go funny.
I don't know weather to rust remedy and then slowly weld this little crease up. I could cover it with underseal but tbh water will find its way over time.
Anyone know of a good seam sealer that I can use on the inside?

It is hard to make out from this pic. But it doesn't usually start there. It starts higher up at the seem on wall of the suspension turret (The outer side of the four). The rust then spreads downwards to the area you have found. If you look in the bodywork section you will find a thread which shows in detail where it rusts behind the scenes.

Could you give me a link to that? I cant seem to find it.
Il get another pic of this when I can but its definitely something that needs looking at on other Subaru's, its definitely a hole as I've sprayed on the inside and got a wet patch outside.

You have to read through a bit to find the pics and explanations. I have been welding the inner arches on my project car today.... not much fun! Managed to set myself and the car on fire a bit. Luckily its just a shell and it was only a little fire

just spent last few weeks undersealing mine etc , this weekend done the inside of the doors/boot lid and removed the sealer on the inside of the boot arches as above not one spot of rust but under the sealer there is no paint and a sticky backed foam removed it all and treated to some Bilt Hamber Electrox topped with seam sealer and Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50 Extreme Duty Anti-Corrosion Wax

Wow that Subaru had a lot of metal cut away!!!
Im not sure if I want to go poking around now cause if I see any rust it will irritate me until its fixed.
Ive definitely got a hole there...I need a better picture.

Here is how you do it, remove all the seam selaer, sand it down as much as you can and this will take forever (ive done it on 2 cars), then when the rust is removed you clean it with thinner, then you use some PROPER 2 component epoxy primer on the metal (forget all the rust converters and other crap), then when there is a thick layer of epoxy you can soak it with some good thin rust-wax or whatever products you can buy in uk (i use tar-based thin rust protection that works really well, its alled Hagmans T03 but dont know if you can get that in UK)
If you are considering cutting away metal for that rust then you need mental help, a cut out - weld in job will never be as good and it will still rust in the new seem and welds.

Im not cutting any metal lol, just treating the best I can and then sealing it up. What I want to try and do is get between the seam and get out as much rust as I can without touching the outer paint/panel.
