Turbo on its way out symptoms?
#3
The trouble is I've just had my rocker gaskets replaced and got a bit of smoke from what must be the headers where excess oil has dripped down. I've not been out in the car loads since the change and the smoke only tend to come when driven hard. I'm hoping this will just burn off over a few days/weeks.
I run a VF34 which has a siren type noise and has done since day one years ago. After reading a bit more online about other symptoms it's starting to make think....Although I'm not loosing any boost that I can see from reading my gauge and still pulls fine. Should I be worried?

Yeah I've seen catastrophic turbo failure with the white smoke, just wondered if the blueish smoke could be turbo seal or crack related. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it is just excess oil on the headers and it clears up after a few hard runs.
Often people who have never been in my car think there's a emergency vehicle behind us the whine is that blimming loud! I like it though

Lots of ways turbos fail (seal fail, shaft/bearing fail, oil supply fail, oil drain fail, foreign object damage etc).
An owl under the bonnet is a good warning sign....get the hoses off and give the shaft a wiggle (up and down and in and out). If its less than a 1mm and spins ok its probably a bit out of balance. But if its got 1mm or more play then you should keep regular checks on it to make sure it doesn't get worse.
I've just replaced a GT17....bearing completely shagged, 10mm of play, wrecked blades on both turbine and compresor wheels.
But, get this, it still made good power and it gave NO SMOKE, nor did the engine lose oil as we driven in this state for a few thousand miles. Oil feed wasn't blocked either, so even with a shagged bearing with loads of play the oil seals still did their job and the car still performed well. The only issue was the noise and a bit of lag at 2000rpm.
