getting air out of coolant system
Have just replaced coolant temp sensor on a 2003 wrx.
Have left the headtank cap off and let car idle with heaters on hot, with the occasional squeeze of the top rad hose, but car seems to be getting hot still.
Also when should the fans kick in??
This is not a headgasket problem, as its just magically started to happen after I replaced the sensor, so obviously im doing something wrong when trying to get the air out the system.
Thanks

just used the test plug under the steering wheel, and the fans come on with that aswell, so I believe that means the fans are working as they should, so possibly just need to remove air from the system properly. Is it about 3/4's on temp gauge fans should kick in normally??

well ive just tried to bleed system again, this time I topped coolant up in header tank, removed the coolant sensor again whilst header cap was off, should remove most of air out of the system, and then ran the car again, but car still going up to just under the red and no fan kicking in, so unsure if I still have air lock or its just the fans not kicking in now

As a test put the fans on constant and see if the temp still rises, was it a genuine temp sensor as not unheard of for cheap ones not to work straight out of the box and be careful letting the temp go to high

well id say its an airlock still, even though the coolant stops bubbling after a short while with header tank open.
Just took car for another short spin, even though temp gauge was already showing a 1/4, probably got 1.5mile before it was over 3/4's again.
Top it off the dam sensor hasn't cured my start issue which has pissed me off even more :/

just checked my rad hoses, top one is very hot, yet bottom one is near enough cold aswell, so guessing theres an issue with my thermostat aswell, so looks as if I have airlock and thermo has gone. typical all this crap when im was planning to advertise car in next week or so

Believe the newage have two sensors one for the ecu and one for the fans so i believe.
Drain the system completely and refill through the turbo ie remove small black pipe from header tank push a funnel into it and fill through the turbo .
Remove all rad caps until the level comes to them ,this method back fills the system and you will never get an airlock

Remember to put the heater on full. Also once the temperature is up to half way mark (normal) it wont go any higher or lower even when the fans are on as it can sit in the same place for 80c-98c,it only goes above the half way mark when you have a problem

ended up taking to the garage in the end, ended up being the new sensor at fault, had replaced the old one and was fine. Bit annoyed that the garage has thrown away my new sensor though as I was going to return it for a refund :/
