Buy a cheap as chips unloved Bug WRX and re-map to 270 BHP, no six speed box, brembo brakes, blue interior or other STi bits. But at that BHP the WRX internals and gearbox won't break

Buy a Clio 182

In all seriousness, bugeye STis can be had for about £4.5/5K. If you can't stretch to that, and that's very understandable and valid situation... Don't buy an Impreza.

All imprezas, especially those at the lower end of the financial spectrum will require some work at some point of which will be expensive. Any car you might buy could all of a sudden blow a motor or gearbox, diff, clutch, driveshaft, turbo etc. All of which you will easy throw £1k and more at the car to fix properly. Chances are, all cars will have been ragged, or modified by "Fred the shed tuning" and you've no real idea what you're getting.

If you don't have the budget for those bills, and there WILL be bills. I'd suggest buying a cheaper performance car that's, cheaper to fix and in better condition than a 20year old Impreza that fits your budget. The problem with imprezas are, they're cheap to buy but not cheap to run or tune properly.
I'm not saying that a bugeye STI won't have problems, what I'm saying is you need to have cash in reserve to the tune of £4/5k to (buy and run) an Impreza.

Please don't be offended Tom, just my thoughts.

Wise words. This is so true, whatever you buy get the best you can & make sure you've cash in reserve for future repairs & mods.

All of the above, young jedi speaks sense...cheap to buy they maybe but even the classic sheds were once sub 6sec\150mph cars and that doesn't come cheap

Happy to take you out in my 182...can't offer you a ride in the wagon just yet but we can sit in it and make car noises if you want

Cheers for all the thoughts people,Dont fancy another Clio been there, had a Williams back in the day & more recently a 172 both great cars
I know any car no matter what make are going to go wrong at some point & cost money when they do,thats just the chance you take or just how your luck goes,Been driving over 20 years & had all sorts ranging from Escort MK2's up to a 911 3.2 SC all gave me agg but thats just a part of the game,I value all you views & sound advice but chucking caution to wind & going to buy myself a Scoob,I love the dam things,I wished I had just stuck with my last one & had it rebuilt, nothing ive ever driven has put a smile on my face as the Impreza did!
BRING ON THE HEART BREAK!!!

As the above. I've had my Classic for a couple of months. Bill stands at £1275.21 for repairs so far. I'd still have a classic all day long though.

You will be in a classic then; when I opted out of my company car scheme late 2003 I was all set to buy a new WRX wagon, had a dealer test drive and it hated it...dealer sent me out in a classic and I've been chucking money at it ever since

If the choices are just between a classic or a bug WRX, then I think I would go for a nice classic.

oh and i sold the 2000 turbo and bought a 300bhp bug wrx in dark blue i honestly dont regret it ........much nicer inside the cabin ,seats, clocks, dash etc IMO i think the only thing i like better about the classic is the front end....the bugs aint the prettiest looking at them striaght on bless them lol only other advantage is they are lighter and spares are easier to come buy .I would def have another classic but id only do so if it was either a nicely tuned RB5 or a P1 or a 22b (never have enough money) but they are the only 3 cars id rather have over my bug wrx now......p1 maybe next year if all goes well

My Facelift Wagon Turbo 2000 is up for sale soon. No drama, no unnecessary mods and no graphics. Just thoroughly enjoyed, but I want a Merc as a daily, so I can build a Datsun long term.
