Unhappy Bye Bye Baby!

Today, I said my goodbyes to the hawk.

As you are aware, my last thread left me feeling gutted, depressed and truly fed up with this car and the problems it throws at me. I’d like to be sitting here expressing how ownership of a Subaru has been magnificent for me…. That is far from the case.
Maybe I bought a lemon in disguise?
Maybe I do literally have some real ****e luck with this thing?

Headgaskets,
Broken wheel nuts and key,
Oil leaks,
Sticking thermostat,
Wheel arch liners kamakazee-ing off
Wheels refurbed

The list soon builds up.
Every month/couple of months I have to pay out for something, and it has completely destroyed my faith and enthusiasm in the marquee. For the last couple of months ive been tossing up the options of what to do.

Throw more money at it for repairs?
Have an expensive rebuild carried out?
Sell it as is and move on?
Roll it off a cliff?

I have seriously thought about each one.

A few weeks ago however, after speaking to a certain gentlemen. I decided ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH!!!.....

And so over the last few days I have cleaned her up, de-rusted the brake discs, and filled the tank with the fancy new V-Power nitro+ / charge you more money for changing the name even though it’s the same thing petrol

At 0400 this morning I woke the neighbours with a flat four growl and rumbled down the road for a nice long slow drive.

Around 5.0 hours (270 miles) @65mph later I arrived here……

And this is where she will stay until I receive a phonecall to come and pick her up.

I haven’t accomplished my original goals for what I wanted to do with the car. Tracks, see the country a bit etc… Considering I’ve wasted/invested the money so far I may as well keep going. I don’t have the luxury of a girlfriend, babies, mortgage etc… So whilst I’m at a young enough age without these ties I may as well do it and enjoy it whilst it lasts.

Complete Engine strip and rebuild using new Subaru gasket kit.

Mahle pistons
K1 H-beam Rods
ACL Race bearings all round
RCM 11mm oil pump
RCM sump baffle
Cosworth head gaskets
Water pump
Cambelt
Deatschwerks 320L Fuel pump
Deatschworks 850cc injectors

The birth of “baby Bomber” (sorry Frayz, name is still in the development process)

All name suggestions welcome, anything is better than… Suzie

Thread subscribed to, passenger ride shot gunned, can't wait to see her finished - she will be AWESOME.

Definitely don't lose faith with the brand, all cars need tlc and maintenance. Us Scooby owners are just more OCD than the rest.

Mines just gone in for head gasket too. Think it's part n parcel of hawk ownership lol

I was advised to remove and blank the secondary air system too while the engines out. That's another thing that breaks. So may be worth doing too.

Thanks for the support guys.

The heads were done last year so thankfully there wasn't any trouble on the way down apart from a bit of oil burning.

Train back was £55 - 3 trains back to romford.

The air pump is going. I was asked if I wanted it to stay lol. Where it sits now looks like a nice cubby hole for a catch tank.

I will at some point write up a project thread and get it in the right place.

Any name suggestions?

So far I have been given

Blue envy - because the cars blue
Cookie monster - black on blue or something? I don't know who the Cookie Monster is
interceptor - from mad max? Again I have no idea.
The predator - because the hawk is a predatory bird

Early planning with Mr. J is looking like sc46, perrin front mount, with dual maps on ecutek.

Forget a name for the mo mate. Lol. SC 46 on a built 2.5 will be lovely.
Are they leaving the block stock or pinning/inserting it?

Ha, even the mother (who hates the car) thinks I should name it. It's not at the top of my list but ill be collecting ideas for it.

The block isn't being pinned, I had asked about it, and was told at my target power (4-450) pinning isn't really a necessity as their are many proven 2.5's from ET without that are running 500bhp+ so If the man says no, I like to think he is confident in his work.

The sc50 was also spoken about in order to reduce boost pressure, however a lot of lag is introduced. So, being more road than track based ill stick with the 46. I'll be very weary on track anyway, just hope I can gain all the confidence back in the 2.5 as right now I cringe every time I hear '2.5' haha.

I assume yours is pinned frayz?

Also what's people's views on decat? As I have the afterburner, I can see it needing changing. Are the milteks track friendly for noise? Would prefer something quiet on cruise but unleashed on wot!

I'm also collecting random bits and pieces for my own mini project for when she's back on sex soil.

Yes mine is pinned, if youre sub 500 then yes pins are not needed. As for track friendly exhaust, the revolution is the quietest 3" system you can buy that's cheap.
I like them as quiet as possible. Mine is mega quiet

Haha cheers lads.

Dont worry frayz ill keep away from anything bomber related.
I have stressed im not going to chase 500 horses. Itll ruin the driveability in my opinion. 450 max, is where im adamant im staying, or where ever the turbo and bits will get to without being stressed!

Ill check out the revolution zorts. I have a while before the second stage of power and tracks so ill get a bit more use from the vortex yet.

Im still working out of the country quite a bit. So not only is it helping to get the funds together its making the time pass faster too.

If it's going on track you'll need to Come Under Noise Testing

Which incidentally is a great name for something temperamental and costly

Ha quality.

Tbf I am growing out of the 'look at me with my massive loud exhaust' phase, and look forward to a non ear bashing drive. (Except when the 'drink petrol' button Is pushed)

Would it be a good move to upgrade the ECU to a Syvecs etc to get the most out of your new build? More expense but more than likely worth it

Would be, but a Syvecs by time you get one installed is the thick end of £2k.

I run the revolution exhaust system and have never had a problem at any of the tracks I have been to so far including Bedford

4-450 on track will be awesome

Really thought you'd sold the old girl for a minute there Dan! So glad you are keeping it.
I know it's given you plenty of headache mate but like anything you just hot to stick at it and I think this build is the best option and will provide heaps of enjoyment and realiability. Alan knows his stuff and you'll be left with an end product you will be able to have full confidence in.
Good luck with the build dude, look forward to seeing it back in Essex soon

Jury is in dispute about syvecs at the moment. Because I can use raceron on mine ill be buying the licence. 1st map for normal road and 2nd for late night road/track.

The only thing I don't like us the map switching; gas pedal and fog button. I would prefer to have my own switch separate, just so I can remember which map I'm in otherwise I'd only be able to tell when I push it to the metal.

Working in Plymouth next week so may pop in to see if the engines out yet, and to watch whatever Martyn may be mapping on my rather elongated lunch break
