Default Help! I don't understand what to do about registration number transfer.....

Have bought a new registration for my car (it's all ABW's fault - when i read he wouldn't be doing his routine work any more, i decided to spend the money i had put aside for some things i wanted him to do on something else )

Anyway, don't know what to do about retaining the current number - if i don't, what happens if i sell the car (unlikely) or it gets written off (quite likely, given my track record) and want to keep my new number for the next car? But if I do, it looks like i have to pay every year to retain it? Or have i got that wrong?

Advice gratefully received........

I hope I'm reading it right, but the current number is 'voided' by the DVLAwhen you stick the new registration on the car. If and when you come to sell the car you can transfer the cherished number to the new vehicle and the 'voided' registration SHOULD go back onto the car. However, sometimes you'll be issued a new, age-related registration number.

IIRC, it's £80 to swap your cherished plate onto a new car or a one-off payment of £105 to put it onto retention.

The only issue with a cherished plate is if the car gets stolen, you can't use it for a year as that registration plate will have a 'lost or stolen' marker on the Police National Computer.

Yes Adidas is correct after all he should be ay Ed
My advice would be to keep the old number plates when you take them off, because as Ed said 9 times out of 10 they reallocate the original number back onto the car. Keeping the original plates safe somewhere means you don`t have to go through the agro of getting the plates made up again. Producing ID etc.
We have changed plates several times now and the original number has been reallocated every time.

As said 9/10 times the original is returned but not always, have swapped plates around 4 times and 2 haven't gone back to the original, but the latest 2 have. You dont need to do anything with the old plate, the DVLA hold that. The only plate you need to worry about is the new one.

I have had my plate on my last 5 cars and i've been lucky and the cars have always had their old plates re-issued

Thank you everyone for the info - what was confusing me was one of the forms I have to fill in and send back, asking if i do/do not wish to retain my present number, fee being £105 if i do, as Adidas said. The £80 transfer fee is included in the price of the new reg, so i don't particularly want to pay another £105, if it's likely the car will be issued with the same number if i sell it. So you think it'll be ok to say no to retaining it? (sorry to be thick - but why change the habit of a lifetime )

Yes there is no reason to ask for the old plate to be put on retention. DVLA decide if that will return if/when you remove.

What you also need as you have a 5 figure plate is a shortened plate.

I'll have a few opinions please! Shortened front plate or no? (F3 WRX - as it's not a word would it look OK on shortened plate or better to have more spacing betwen F3 and WRX on standard length plate?

I personally would prefer the smaller plate, Also remember legally the smaller plate will be allowed as long as the plate is 12mm larger than the letters. the spacing on the other (like mine ) isnt quite legal.
