Don't get these problems with PS3's ....... Maybe Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to inbuild some problems with their products ........ But then, what's new about Microsoft doing that .
And before you say, it can be replaced/fixed under warranty ...... Thats fine, unless it goes 'after' your warranty has run out.

yep they extended the 3 ring warrenty to 3 years which is plenty of time ,by the time they dont fix them xbox's will be down to about £70 for the arcade version as you already own the hard drive .
i stand mine up and had no problems for 2 years now my brother lays his down and been sent back to the shop once for a replacement and also been sent back to microsoft for repair once.
mine is stood on my sky plus box which causes heat but i think because the xbox is stood up air can circulate around the fan holes .

The CPU has a decent sized heatsink, but the GPU is located under the DVD drive, so it's got a feeble heatsink due to lack of space, it isn't exactly efficient and causes the problem.
Also the method of clamping the heatsinks to the processors is cheap and nasty, the use flimsy X-Clamps, with can distort when they get hot, this movement causes solder joints to fail hence the error code 74 (first stage) then the RROD, though E-74 don't always come up on screen.
Microsoft's cure is to use epoxy resin to glue the processors onto the board so they can't vibrate as they get hot
