Default Computer Help!

I know its a long shot but can anyone help??

I have a laptop that I am trying to get working as its completely cream crackered!! It is/was running Windows XP but the start up files are corrupt (system32 files etc.) I want to just wipe the lot off of it and do a new clean install of XP, I have a genuine XP home edition disc but for some reason the laptop will not boot from the CD drive, the drive spins up and starts to read the disc but just stops?? I have replaced the CD drive with a new one but it does the same thing??

I have also tried copying the XP CD to a memory stick and got the laptop to boot from a USB device but that does not work either.

The only thing I can get is the BIOS settings or when booting from the HDD it will load up to the screen that asks you to select between normal/safe mode etc. but no matter which one I select it just starts running and freezes?

Any suggestions people? Is there any way of loading DOS or a command line without loading the OS up?

Thanks

I have set the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive but it wont do it, it starts spinning the disc then stops and displays "no bootable devices press F1 to reboot" etc

I will have a look at that site though, thanks.
