hey guys, i know there was at one time a guy on our forums who specialised in TVs etc...

basically i wondering if any of you could point me in his direction lol, because i need some advice

Im looking to buy an LCD TV, around 40-42" in size, looking to spend around £800ish, but il stretch that price for the best

i need it to be HD ready, but still have good picture quality on normal TV, preferably have freeview decoder built in, have the fastest refresh rate it can for non blurry pictures, be able to play Bluray standard pictures with no trouble, be as energy efficient as possible, and anything else ive neglected to mention that people think il need!

any advice on the best brands/models to look at much appreciated

i was going to post up that im also looking for a new plasma and not lcd as so many have advised me to keep clear of lcd because of the blur problem but with the plasma you have the problem of screen burn especialy from sky corner logos and the dreaded red dot!!!!!

but if Catalunya Chris is about id like to see if he would be able to get a conpetitive price on a pionner pdp lx 508d

I'm on my 2nd Plasma, 42" SD and now 50" HD. Not had any screen burn problems with either and I'm a gamer so there used to having static images on screen. Little screen retention but no burn.

just to add, I've had one screen burn where the RED dot from sky was up but leaving it on a bright white screen for a bit eliminates that,

OK The "BIG LCD/PLASMA DEBATE"

I think everyone has their own personal opinion on whats best as they both have their own plus points and draw backs?

But my personal opinion is LCD, the reason for this is mainly is the "Image burn" problem? Plasma produces a fantastic picture as the blacks and whites are far more pure and they produce a slightly softer and less digital picture (More like the old CRT's) but I find image burn to be a problem?
Emma listens to the radio on freeview, but this puts a logo bang in the middle of the screen, when I get home from work and turn on the TV I can tell her what station she was listening to as I can still see the logo when the pic darkens?

Once you have image burn as RB5 said you can ge rid of it by blasting it with a bright white screen for a while, what this does is leave a uniform image burn across the whole screen. I recently spoke to pioneer about this and their recomendation is to leave it on an untuned station over night so the "snow" will mask it.

LCD though has improved masively over the last year or so, the reaction times on the pixles have quickened up and the blacks n whites are so much better due to whiter back lights! They can still look a little poor on terestrial and SD pictures due to the digital nature of LCD, but if you feed them with HD they are stunning. Also with no image burn problems what so ever so gaming and PC use is not only sharper but safer LCD also uses a lot less energy to run to costs you less and better on the enviroment. (Carbon offsetting ur scoob LOL)

I have about 30 flat screens on display "SONY SAMSUNG and PANASONIC" from 20" to 52" and only 3 are plasma?

Anyway the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so the best advice I can give is to think about what you are going to connect to it and look @ the pic from all scorces, ie Freeview, Sky HD, and Bluray, and see what you prefer

As for 1080i (HD 720 lines) and 1080p (Full HD 1080 lines) Sky HD is only 1080i, 1080p is only available from Bluray (PS3) and DVDHD (in the new black Xbox) so again you only need this if you are going to connect a 1080p scorce into it!

for your £5.5k you also get older techo and lower rez. LG's 60" is around 2K but you are risking all if you buy LG

Is there a major diference between 780 and 1080 (or something like that) resolution?

I'll be using it mainly for Sky (not Sky HD/ 360 YET)

I'm looking for a 37".... seen lot's of these Tesco's cheap deals on they tend to be Techica or some unknown make?

A quick explanation of the difference between 1080p ("Full HD" max 1080 lines of resolution) and 1080i ("HD" max 720 lines of resolution)

HD
1080i the "i" means interlaced, this is the way the pic is produced on the screen, the TV interlaces all the odd lines then the even lines the same as an old CRT TV, so if you was to freeze the screen you would only ever see 540 lines on the screen @ any one time odd or even. However the TV will run @ 720p depending on the scorce.

FULL HD
1080p the "p" means progressive, so the TV will have all the 1080 lines on the screen, progressively scanning pixle by pixle left to right top to bottom. so it is actually twice the resolution of 1080i.

What resolution do you really need?
If you are running analouge or digital terrestrial TV, Sky or Sky+, Cable TV, DVD, VCR, PS2. You actually have no need for a HD tv as these all run @ the standard 625i resolution.

If you have or thinking of upgrading to Sky HD, Cable HD, PC, XBox 360. Then you want a HD TV as these will all run @ 1080i or 720p.

If you want the full benefit of Bluray, HDDVD, PC (Depending on graphics card), PS3, or the new "Black" XBox 360. You want FULL HD as these will run @1080p

Their are also some "Upscaling" DVD players and Recorders out their, don't be fooled as they are not HD DVD players but they will take a standard DVD disc and upscale it to either 720p 1080i or 1080p depending on the model, this is still not true HD but they will fake it by creating extra lines of information themselves, the result is a picture better than normal but not HD.
