Angry The joys of trying to sell private.

I reduced the price of my scooby last Saturday and put it on Pistonheads. Mid week a bloke starts emailing me wanting to know everything just short of what I had for dinner! The car is up for £5250. He says he does not really want one with 18 inch alloys and big spoiler so offers £4000. I politley tell him to carry on searching the adds. He then offers £4375. I tell him £4500 and he can have it. He phones last night asking for my address saying he is comming this morning stopping off at bank to take out money.
He phones at 10.00 saying he has been to the bank and is on the way. I get car out and start washing it, he then phones at 10.20 saying he has got cold feet and changed his mind!!! This was after about 7 emails and 4 phone calls.
What he meant was he had managed to achieve orgasm without an actual viewing!!! tosser!
Unless of course he is a car theif wanting my address .

You've got to be so careful selling a car, I had mine up for sale in the Autotrader and had 3 attempted scams, where they offered to send me bankers drafts for over the amount wanted, and they wanted me to give them a £1000 refund, plus they'll send a low loader to pick the car up.

Not to mention agencies who claim they have people wanting to buy the car but wanted £80 up front, if they were so confident, why don't they get the buyer in touch first and ask for the £80 under contract later?

I just sold my seat leon cupra through ebay, and had loads of scammers try and con me out of it.

And i then went on to buy my 1st scooby through ebay, and had loads of scammers trying to get me to pay by instant money transfer and then they would deliver the car 5 days later i dont think so sumhow

But i have spoken to a few people that have been conned.

Buying and selling cars used to be fun, now its a mine field.

I used to buy and sell a lot of cars, but as you say, it's a minefield, and I can't be bothered with that now

Yes I had already had the agency calls but this guy sounded genuine, you just cannot tell anymore. My Brother sold a set of alloys to fit a BMW a few weeks ago and it was mind blowing people trying to arrange shipping etc and they were just a £500 second hand set of Rochford Tyres alloys!

When selling a niche market car, like a subaru, and a modified one at that, I think you have to accept that it will not be as straight forward to sell as a run of the mill car.

I am about to put one of my scoobs up for sale, and hope that my previous experiences still hold true. I have always found that if you are absolutely straight about the car and price it realistically, then they sell quickly. Fingers crossed
