Worth the wait (",) Vredestein Ultrac 235-40-18
Some of you may know that ive been waiting over a month to try and source some rather interesting tyres.
Zak and i have had quite a bit of greif trying to get hold of a set of Vredestein Ultacs.
These are made in Holland and are very difficult to source in the UK due to only a handful of dealers.
However the effort put in has definitly paid off and im SOOOO glad i waited!!
Just in from a propper session out in the pooring rain..
All i can say is that these are (no bullsh1t) the best tyres ive EVER driven on in the wet. Blows the F1 GSD3 way out of the water and i thought the Goodyears were impossible to beat in the wet!!
There is a tight roundabout local to me that is about 30ft in diameter, in the pouring rain i decided to just explore the limits of these tonight.
Please bare in mind i have not scrubbed these in properly yet but increasing on speed on the roundabout gradually to over 45mph and these didnt batter an eyelid.. i was gobsmacked. Only when really really pushed could i get a glimpse of push from the front!!!!
(This is pretty incredible when you consider how stiff the car is due to its stiff/road chassis setup)
I am yet to push these in the dry yet but these are easily better than anything i have used before, some of which include:
Toyo T1S
Eagle F1 GSD3
Avon ZZ3
BFGoodrich Profiler G
Cannot yet compare to the RE070 in the dry but im interested in seeing how close these come if at all?
Far and away the 070's are the best thing ive EVER experienced in the dry

I have been really impressed with the Yokohama's Parada's having always used the Avon ZZ3's

These were looked at along with the R888 and Dunlop Direzzas.
Just for comparission the A048s for the 235-40-18 was coming out around £178 a corner and that was trade.
Having said that the Vredesteins RRP is £175+VAT a corner but i know of a certain someone who can get them for a much much better price than that if you ask him nice

Just a quick question - are these REALLY that much different??? - Different enought to honestly justify the prices being quoted???
I had Potenzas RE070's on my WRX when I bought it, got totally pi**ed off with them tramlining all the time - sometimes dangerously so and causing far more oversteer than I expected, I eventually changed the fronts to Khumo's and the rears to Kleber's when they needed sorting and never had a moments problem with either of them from that point onwards - and NO tramlining or unexpected oversteering situations........ Potenzas are just not good enough IMO... Might be fine for the 'basic' cars but just not good enough on a performance car......
Prices for the Khumo's/Kleber's were also considerably less than the ones being quoted - so back to the original question - are these REALLY that much different??? For the prices being quoted for just ONE tyre I could replace TWO....

I think there's more to your comments than meets the eye. If you experienced more oversteer with the RE070s than you do with mismatched tyres front to rear then something has to have been changed geometry wise, or the road/weather conditions you're comparing them to.
If anyone thinks the RE070's are bad in the dry OR wet for that matter I'd like to offer you a passanger ride in the STi, and before anyone suggests otherwise it runs on totally stock suspension................

I accept there may have been changes on my WRX before I bought it, but TBH a mate (who got me into Scoobies) had exactly the same problem on his WRX until he was forced (Yobbos doing a tyre slashing kick) to change the RE070's to Toyo's and he immediately noticed the improvement - and he was the first and only driver on his car....
My 40k service/MOT will be due by the end of the year and as you are under 5 miles from me, I will be booking my car into you for that so perhaps we can have a chat then.......

RE070's are some of the very best tyres out there for an impreza... breathtaking grip in the dry and very very good in the wet.
Looie, i think the tyres were not youre problem mate. The 070's are very very stiff and so transmit your suspension setup to the road very very accurately.. if you found an improvement by fitting inferoir tyres to the 070 then they were obviously compensating for an alignment problem..

pmsl ... has anyone actually tried these tyres out on a track. Or are they the just the best ever on the road - i.e. absolutely no testing conditions with which to make informed judgement?

They are a high performance road tyre.. but i will let you know when i come back from the ring on the 2nd of November
If i wanted a tyre to you on track i would be using some road legal cut slicks wouldnt i?
Probably not the best thing to run seeing as were coming into winter ???

I have some Kuhmo road Legal slicks in wheel bags in the shed if you want to borrow them for the ring
They are on standard Sti wheels [painted black of course]

Just go for the slicks. TBH I have used a set and don't see what the big danger issue is. If you are a fool they will punish you but seeing as most people can't even drive properly (myself included) with regular tyres it makes no real difference.
