Default FAO - Cornelious

#1 I did have this in the technical section, but, somebody said that you may be able to help me!

Basically, I've installed a flmer kit and it worked for about 10 minutes. Then stopped!

Took the cicuit out of the module to find a simple 555 timer circuit connected to large 2N3055 transistor. The transistor had melted the plastic lid and failed, the 555 timer was also knackered. So.....

I replaced the 555 and the transistor with new items and it worked. To stop this happening again I added an ignition module from Maplins between the original module and the coil (So the Maplins unit would take all of the current and discharge from the coil.)

Again, used itcontinously for about 5 mins, and it is broke again! I'm not to sure why this is happenening because the Maplins circuit should be taking the current load, so the module with the 555 timer shouldn't have any strain at all and should continously pulse????

Do you know where I'm going wrong???

is the 2n3055 sitting in a heatsink? by the sounds of it, it's overheating and melting the case, if not, you'll need a T03 heatsink and mount it on the case, but don't short the 'sink out to ground in anyway as this will overload the circuit and damage the 555 timer

also, you shouldn't need the maplins ignition module as the coil will discharge on it's own accord once the power is switched off

PM back at ya

I agree with you mate, didn't realise you mounted the coil on wood, which will insulate it.

Chris, don't worry mate, not forgotten. got a new cutter so will be done very soon so you can practise before the tunnel run

Jus put the new 555 timer in, waiting to get a soldering iron 2 change the 2n3055, should be tomorrow!

Just a thought - the coil I have is from an old 5 series BMW, it's painted black, so surely this will insulate the actual body of the coil from the bracket (which will now be earthed)????????????

Anybody??
