Default What happens when you go to a rolling road.

No funnies please - this is a genuine question.

I know rolling roads are used for finding out BHP and torque, but what would I expect/ have to do if I went to one.

What is the sort of cost, I know there is one happening on 8th july, but I can't do that, and to be truthful, without knowing exactly what happens, I would like to spend my sheckels.

Any advice please

Thanks Andy

Have a word with Paul at Engine advantages, Witham - 01376 502522, mention me Paul Southin from the ESC as I've arranged a couple RR dys there.

basically, they strap your car down to the rollers, drive sedately to third gear and put their foot down until the power peaks and then back off. Bit scary for the first time as inside and it's LOUD!!! Good fun though

Your car is straped to four rollers, the operator takes the car through the gears to flatout, or there abouts, the computer then calculates the power and torque of the car. Then the car is taken of the rollers, your given a nice print out of the figures and you pay and go home.

What would happen if they blew the engine doing that?

Who's responsibility is it?

I thought about going on the 8th July trip, but TBH I'm not convinced my WRX would be able to take that sort of hammering, and if it did blow, who would pay to fix it?

in a nutshell, it's your responsability, as you'll have to sign a disclaimer before the run

You'll find yourself obsessed with the figures on the print out and start a never ending quest to get more bhp

I had wondered that!

So in summary, you pay a load of wedge to have the nuts thrashed out of your car, to which you get a piece of paper that proves you should spend more money

Thanks for the answers guys - just one more question - in you opinions - is it worth doing?

well, the chart will show if theres any flat spots, ie fuel mixture leaning out under load, ideally, the chart should be a nice curve

depending on the RR that you go to - they monitor the engine fuel mixture and knock as it is increasing in speed and stop the test at any point if the engine is is showing signs of problems.

they will then tell you what problems these are and how to stop them.

def worth doing for knowing that the car is running the right fuel mixture and not detting up through the rev range. much safer to do it in that environment than to rev it on the road.

As said.... IMHO it's the best way of checking that your car's engine is in good health - a bit like if you go to a gym for an assessment & they stick the monitors all over you & get you to "run" on the treadmill....

...... And the bonus is the bit of paper with the bhp & torque figure on it

However be very carefull what RR you use......

I went to one and it claimed one figure, then I took it to my tuner and it was over 70bhp more without touching the map......
so that basically meant one RR was running reduced figs to try and get you to spend your money with them...

How WRC Technologies get their figures.

http://www.wrc-tech.co.uk/services-rolling-road-faq.htm

And to set peoples minds at ease, they do look after your car while it's with them.

"WRC Technologies' Service Technicians will load and prepare your vehicle on the Dyno, connect the wide-band air/fuel ratio diagnostic system, inlet air temperature sensors and boost pressure sensors , then execute two full-throttle dyno passes with horsepower readings within 1 bhp between runs. This ensures the engine operating conditions have stabilised, and the power readings we obtain are truly accurate. Your vehicle's dyno runs are recorded in real time, and printed out in full color for your records."

"To ensure the safety of our customers’ cars, a Lambda meter is used to monitor air/fuel ratio, in real time, as the car is run on the dyno. This ensures the vehicle’s engine is accurately monitored, so that problems can be identified and a dyno run halted before any damage can occur."

And they will supply a bag to put all the bits in if needed.Joking.
