Finally finished stripping the old engine down, and found the problem, not surprising really:

Big end bearing on Number 4 piston self destructed just a mangled mess, damn lucky the block didn't explode along with it!! at least it helped locking the crankshaft in place so I could take off the flywheel

What are you doing with the old block Paul, is it not repairable

No mate, the block around the main bearings is badly damaged as well, all it's good for is a coffee table
