Default BU66ER - need some advice on gearboxs problems

ESC people - I have posted this everywhere and wondered if any of you lovely people could help / advise, I've done a few things to my car but not replaced the gearbox or engine before!! help.........

Need some urgent advice, my car is an 02 WRX bugeye with 50k miles. Was turning into a road with a speed hump at the entrance, was only doing walking pace, as I went over the hump (wasnt very big and the bottom did NOT touch the hump) I heard a clicking noise, thought a mudflap had got caught, tried to pull away to park up and check it, the car just bogged right down and the clicking noise turned into a loud grinding noise. I was holding up traffic so put it in second and tried to pull away, the car really bogged down again and only just about moved.
Stopped ASAP, put it in neutral and lifted the clutch, the engine immediately died!!
Looked under the card, there wasnt much else I could do, no traces of oil or metal anywhere in the road or from under the car.
Checked the engine bay, all seemed ok. Started her up in neutral with the clutch down and the engine fired up absolutely fine.
Tried to bring the clutch up still in neutral and the car started to bog down, make loads of metal grinding noises and tried to edge forward.

I'm pretty sure the box has gone but not sure why - I never launch it from a stand still, have always treated it pretty delicate due to other peoples stories on here, and it's only got a TEK3 remap so cant have more than 280bhp.

Low loader came, the car was pushed without a problem when it was switched off and in neutral!!!!! - how does this work???

Engine on and in neutral - car dosent move without the clutch down
Engine off and in neutral - car can be moved without touching the clutch????

I dont understand why it moves with the engine off, but needs the clutch depressed when it's switched on!!

Sorry for the long thread, but I wanted to show exactly what happened
Could really do with some advice - has the box gone, centre diff, or the transfer box??
Is it all in one unit??? Or are they seperate???

All advice much appreciated

Ross

No Xmas cruising for me!!! 1.25 Fiesta power dosent seem quite the same

Sounds like you've been hanging around Betts too often, and you have now caught his dodgy gearbox syndrome

seriously mate, sorry to hear that

Just found out yesterday that the gearboxes on Impreza's have a neutral gear switch, but not sure what it actually does, so it may be the problem

Funny you say that Paul, I was following Betts at the time

Thanks for the wonderful comments from 'our leader' - cheeky sod and everyone else

Thanks for the offer Ed, I'm working all over Xmas so wont be on the road until the new year gonna miss all the fun in the snow and ice
If anyone has an idea what maybe causing this, please let me know, I've been told lots of different theries so far and havent got a clue (Uncle John is coming over Wednesday so hopefully get the Scooby 'wizard' on the case)

Wouldnt be able to guess without hearing it mate but definitely sounds more box related than transmission ie, not centre diff etc.

Somethig seems seized somewhere within the box, does it try and turn the engine over if you try pushing it whilst in gear?

Clutch is obviously working fine it seems.

Ross im on 07946 467798 if you wanna gimmie a call about it and i'll help any way i can.

If you do have to go down the box route, get yourself an STI 6 speed and fit and forget.

Hope you get it sorted bud

Ross, I have a subaru technical support CD, I'll have a look through it.

Betts said that he heard a big bang and thought your gearbox blew up hope it's an exaggeration mate

It could be the gear linkage broken, and instead of going in first, it could be trying to go into 3rd or 5th, which would explain the bogging down, and the grinding may be the gear selector touching the cogs

Obviously, with out seeing the car and knowing exactly what happened, I can't be sure, but the above is a possiblity

Cheers for that Paul, I didnt think of that, I've got that cd at home somewhere, will dig it out.
If the selector is trying to get in 3rd or 5th, then i'm not sure why it bogs down in neutral?!?!? and I cant understand how it can be pushed whilst in neutral with the engine off, but when the engine is on, needs the clutch depressed when its still in neutral?!?!?

It may have sounded like a BANG outside but inside it just sounded like metal grinding together (horrible noise).

Hopefully get it looked at on Wednesday but wont be able to take the box out before Christmas unless I'm lucky.

Cheers for the offer Steve, what do you mean by internals?? gearbox or engine?? .......... remember I'm your bestest, bestest, bestest friend
