Default Annoying Troublesome Engine Managment Light!

Hi guys, as the title suggests I'm hoping to pick your brains re my engine management light.

My car's an '03 Blob Wagon, and the eml light has been a pain lately. It came on about a month back so I whizzed it round to the garage. They plugged it into a top whack Snap-On diagnostics machine which told us there was no fault present! The supposed codes were wiped and light reset.

A few weeks after it came on again. I plugged in a cheap crappy reader and it told me there was one fault but the code wasn't available! Again I wiped it and it stayed off until today.

I thought I'd get the garage to try again seen as though my 'tool' is a little pants, and yet again it was saying no fault found. Everything wiped I set off and a mile down the road it came back on! My ****ty reader said the same, so again it was wiped, then it came back on straight away!

After I'd fueled up I parked up and tried again. It was then telling me the eml light was on but there were no faults! After resetting yet again, touch wood, it hasn't come back on.

I'm hoping it's nothing major, maybe a faulty light? Is this possible and has anyone had any similar stupid experiences? I don't really want to go down the bulb removal route as, when it's working, the engine management light is a useful thing to have, but does anyone have any suggestions?

There isn't really anything similar happening each time the light comes on, and the car seems to drive ok before it's on and once it is on, it's baffling me, I just don't like the thought of having to drive around with it on. The only thing that maybe connects each time it's come on is that the car's been low on fuel, not quite at the light coming on stage, but it's been pretty low. It's probably nothing at all to do with it but I'm just trying to piece things together.

Anyways, any help, hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Get it read at a Subaru specialist. The Snap On reader is totally useless on Subarus & often missreads codes.

it must be a subaru specific code as my code reader usually tells me all of them but i have had one without a code before, as above take it to subaru specialist and diagnose just to make sure nothing is wrong

Cheers for the replies guys. The stupid thing came on again tonight, just as I'd set off to work, not good with the prospect of having to do a round trip of 70 miles!

Pulled over an stuck the code reader on, this time it said two faults, one again n/a but I've actually got the number of the second, looks like it's a knock sensor issue. So off to the garage it goes tomorrow, again

I'm wondering if the reader is perhaps picking up the illuminaed light as a fault? Hmmmm, guess we'll have to see once the knock sensor's sorted, if not then off to a specialist I go better warn the wallet!
