Engine codes

hi, how close do the engine codes need to be when replacing an engine?
eg my engine is an ej202 but will an ej201 work ok?
what is the difference?

for anyone interested the 202 is SOHC and the 201 is DOHC,
i just need to know if i can use a 201 in a 202? has anybody done it?
