Hi all ... I'm new to this all tuning and remapping scene so be gentle pls

So I have a MY97 GF8 wagon and the car has some modes:
- decat exhaust
- boosted turbo at 1bar

But doesn't have a remap... so I was thinking what is the best solution for the ecu update.

I read at some subaru forums that I can just swap the ecu and the do a daughterboard myself (and a electronics guru friend of mine) like alcyone.org.uk shows. But I'm not sure what is the best ecu swap for the wagon and what ecu I can use because I want to have a spare if something goes wrong. But I'm not sure which ROM to use.

The other option is to get ESL remap but its a bit pricey for me (I'm not from the UK so it will be around twice the normal price).

So to sum up:
-Can i only swap the ecu?
-If yes, which is the best one for my setup?
-Do I need remap if i get a new ecu?
-If yes, what is the best ROM for my setup?

I'm sorry for the noobiesh question. I search the forum but didn't find anything on this topic.
