Depends on the model year of car rather than registration date. If its a 97/98 car then its an esl board. If its a 99/2000 model then can be done with ecutek.

Have a look at the ecu part number for a difinitive answer

If the coilpack is offset to passenger side it is a 99. If in the centre it is a 98

Can you check the aluminium vin plate on the nearside strut top for the model number and post that as the date of reg would make it difficult for the car to be a MY98, it would have had to have been sat somewhere for quite a period. MY99 vehicles were from September 1998 to august 1999. MY98 were from september 1997 to august 1998. Also look at the engine code, if its EJ205???? or EJ207???? then its a MY99 car and the ecu is directly mappable.

as simon said , if coils in the middle 99.9% its a v3/4 which is 97/98 so you will need an esl board
