I don't know about all the various mafless mapped set ups
But I'm mafless and my maf is left plugged in because it uses the inlet air temp portion of the maf
If I install a separate iat sensor I could remove the maf completely , and it wouldnt make much odds to running if its plugged in or not

Does it have or can you see a sensor anywhere in or around the hose between the intercooler and throttle body/manifold area?

It's possible that the MAF is in fact buggered hence why it cuts out when it's connected.
I'd be tempted to get it to a specialist and get it checked out.
