What turbo for 400-450bhp???
Classic
2.1 forged
v3 sti heads
rcm headstuds
alcatec ecu
currently running a genuine afp td05-20g however its a bit tired
car made 400bhp on a good day
would be happy with a similar end power or slightly more...car is used on track only
3 inch inlet is not an issue
looking for advice on what turbo to look at purchasing either new or second hand (so if you have one suitable please feel free to comment below 😂
id even consider rotated setup if anyone has one available for the right money!
cheers

If you are going to spend your money on a turbo get one that has been tried and tested and is reliable,i have been burnt before in my younger years buying a no brand turbo that let go in two months... it can be like pot luck with those lower brand turbos really, some people are just plain lucky, i Personally would never ever take that chance again.SJ.

When researching the above turbo’s for my build I found the Sc/Blouch turbo’s to have nylon bearing carriers and inferior internals, some also suffer from cracking on the exhaust housing.
Not my words that is what I have read from various forums in the UK and the US.
Lots of info out there if you dig deep enough.
I bought a new mdx321T which has metal bearing carriers and a ceramic coating.
Im not for one moment saying that the Blouch is not a good turbo, I just think personally the MD turbo’s are better.
IME buying a used turbo is a bad idea, buy cheap buy twice.

Siv mate i asked a technical advisor at Garrett turbos themselves about the reason that they use nylon/resins for the bearing cages, and he practically said that alot of R&D has gone into them he said that Nasa use the same process and type on their bearing types....He said "Some bearing retainers or bearing cages are made of metals such as heat-treated aluminum, solid bronze, or pressed steel. Others are made of non-metal materials such as nylon, PTFE, or phenolic resins. Pressed steel is a common choice. Brass cages have good noise characteristics and are often used in harsh or corrosive environments. Phenolic or fiber-resin cages are designed for spindle bearings turbochargers and machine tool applications. These new bearing retainers or bearings cages are relatively lightweight and can withstand high speeds contamination and heavy loads."Taken from his email to me"...Siv i personally think a lot of these third party companies start up the scaremongering to earn a extra dollar, Remember Garrett have links to Nasa and have been producing turbos for donkeys years now and are the market leaders in turbo technologies and research.SJ.
My head can’t get round the fact of nylon in a seriously hot turbo spinning it’s t!ts off hence my decision to go with the lateral option.
Just to add I was also swayed by the fact that Blouch stopped using original Garrett cores to reduce cost, from what I understand they have now gone back to the Garrett core.
With that in mind I would be cautious about buying a used Blouch turbo without knowing the authenticity of the core.

Completely understand your thinking mate, but the way the Garrett technical advisor explained things to me it put my mind at rest, he even said to me how much Garrett turbos have i heard of that prematurely fail? I have never had a Garrett one yet fail and I have been using their turbos since I had my renault 5gt turbo in the 80's Lol...Your right when you say that turbochargers these days are a big investment cost wise,i can remember buying brand new hybrid turbos for around £450 with 360 degree thrust bearings...how times have changed.SJ.

I think if your looking for one of these turbo’s and your budget can only stretch to second hand then I would take it to a reputable turbo builder like Craig Bellworthy at midland turbo’s, at least then you have had a clean bill of health and anything worn can be replaced.
Big risk bolting on a used turbo IMO.

Doesn’t the mdx brand need parts of the chassis grinding away or something?

I'd be more worried about the gearbox , if you still have a 5 speed it will be the weakest link at that power
you possibly already have got a six speed though as you seem clued up

In the same boat thinking a turbo swap myself
My car has the SC36 at the moment was actually one of the very first that scooby clinic made, so it's been on there a very long time!
When it was installed years ago it made 373bhp, went for a health check on the car and Dyno print out for 381bhp last year (was a colder day)
Recently took the turbo off and it's still like the day it went on
If the bigger SC series are anything like the SC36 I'd be perfectly happy using one again (appreciate they could be totally different turbos)
Cars used for track days and nurburgring trips quite a lot of them to be fair so it's had a lot of hard use!
My short list of choices would be (least amount of lag as possible)
Md321H
Or
sc42
I'd have snapped up the one in the for sale section but struggling to justify it in these testing times
