Default 98 octane on a 102 map.

Hey guys me again,

I testsdrived a 2004 blobeye with a 6 speed sti box and a built 2.0 engine with 350-360 hp and i had a BLAST!

it drove really great, shifted great, no noises, engine runned well etc.

BUT i have a question, he claims the car is mapped on fuell 102 octan,

But he says sometimes he puts in octane 98, so i asked him if this isnt bad for the engine and he replied to me that it cant do harm but will only lose some power.

Thia sounded quite weird for me because i thought running 98 on a 102 map is not the way to go. And probably is bad for the engine?

So whats the deal ^_^

Thanks!

Do you get 102 octane at the pumps in Netherlands? If not, why would you have 1 map for a fuel you can't get hold of easily. Cause race car?

Lucky B's.

If he runs on 98 when 102 is readily available, walk away. What else does he scrimp on?

Boots it?

We have 102 available but only in some places, very few though. 98 is available in alot more places thus more logical.

Only question is if its bad to run 98 on a 102 mapping ^_^

Thanks guys

sorry English terminology - driving hard on boost.

Yes - there is a high chance of detonation due to running the car on lower octane fuel which will lead to engine failure.

If i car is mapped for certain rating of fuel - whether its 95/99/102, putting fuel in with a less octane rating will cause damage to the engine.

Ahhh thanks bro!

Got some new info though, he says its a flex-fuell map, so its capable of running on multiple fuells ^_^

Any thoughts on this?

Thank you

If it has flexfuel (which can be made available even on the OEM ECU with the right rom) it should be fine.

Flex Fuel? That's for alcohol fuels (methanol/ethanol). That is not the same as RON?
