Default "Steppy" throttle response

Hi all, I have a w reg 2000 Impreza turbo, totally standard, no mods with a bit of a funny problem.....when the car is cold starts 1st time etc...but when you are driving normal it seems like the acceleration comes in "steps", I.E. when the turbo starts to boost it isn't smooth gradual acceleration it feels like in "steps", when its fully warmed up it isn't like this but smooth and normal, has anyone ever come across this? also at odd times when its cold the ecu light will come on but go off again after about 10 seconds, any help would be great

Clean the boost solenoid(search on here for more info)
Do an ECU check for fault codes using the cars self diagnostics(use search button to see how)

If you are getting CEL light then do a search on how to read the codes. 2 sets of wires under the steering column need connecting - the CEL will flash a certain number of pulses indicating where the problem is.

Probably not best to give any boost until the car is up to temp too. Just a thought

Thanks for the reply's guys, will give this a go and see how we get on, its only normal driving when cold and the boost will be a very small amount, its in too nice condition to thrash at anytime

Mine was doing similar, but without the ECU light coming on, just changed all the spark plugs, and the issue completely disappeared, now pulls smooth, even from cold, although obviously not giving it much boost until fully warmed up.
