Default Logging this week,detcans mounting?

Hi,I've just installed ESL to make my car mappable,im going to start by doing plenty of logging before I make any adjustments to the map.
My question is about the det cans and how to mount them?
I have the correct kit to build the cans and I understand I need to mount to the block as close to knock sensor as possible, how do you guys who road map use them tho? I can see it's easy on the dyno as the bonnets open and cars not on the move. Would taking the pipe through the bulkhead into the car be the way to go or is there any tips on mounting the pipe on the outside of the car?
Cheers
Rich

ahh your using old school proper ones with big tubing then? I use one of the ebay hidden hearing jobbies with a remote mount microphone. The wiring for it is very thin so I can still close the bonnet and bring it in through the door shut

if your going through the firewall - passenger side grommet comes in behind the glovebox - if you unbend a coathanger and try and head across and then down very steeply you'll be able to make a path OK.

Cheers bludgod, yeh I got a nice set of peltor cans ready for drilling, thanks for the tip.
Do your ebay hidden hearing jobbies with a remote mount microphone work well? Are they sold as a ready made det hearing kit or do you have to diy the kit?

nah not sold as kit - but didn't take much to repurpose them

it works OK - I was able to hear some knock that the car wasn't yet hearing so I'm happy with that.

Just took one of these:

Unscrew - open it up. Desolder the mic and add 4m of skinny wire to it to remote mount it. I used an old battery clamp from a knacered set of jump leads and stuck the mic to it with hot glue, sticks and sticks of hot glue. The glue works to block out wind noise which will otherwise make your ears bleed

oh also - bin the in ear buds you get with it and replace with something a bit more DJ spec, my bose headphones have been great at picking up extra range that the earbuds just can't do.

Nice one,I will order a set,but I really do like the idea of the old school set up and I have to give them a go before I go digital,it would be rude not to
Really looking forward to mapping,I know it's gonna take me ages to get to grips with it but as long as I take it steady and do plenty of logging then I recon it's going to be fun. Itching to get started but I've not even had chance to plug the laptop in yet

I know what takes a pro mapper around 4hrs to achieve a good map is going to take me about 4 months of dithering to achieve an average map lol but I got time to play and hopefully after time and when I start adding mods then I will at least know some basics and have a good starting point
Is your business in mapping(if you don't mind me asking) is it a steep learning curve?

my hobby is mapping yes its a steep learning curve there is a lot of data to take on board but so long as you keep reading and keep learning you'll start making leaps and strides.

I'm certainly not a pro mapper but I've had no complaints from the people I've helped so far - in some cases making more power than supposedly "pro tunes" from other suppliers.

Now - I say "pro tunes" with quotes because whoever would dare to call what they've done a pro tune should have their legs tied apart for the entire town to kick them in the nuts until everyone's tired. If you've been out an an expertly tuned car you'll instantly feel the difference between a professional job and some guy who knows how to change the target boost table.

no problems, I'm not sure if I can help you with the specifics of ESL - but if you have any generic questions I'll help if I can just drop me a PM or an email I'm on about 35 cars now so have a rough idea what goes where.
