Default DIY Mapping, Getting started.

Well i've decided it's about time I dipped a toe in the water.

So what equipment do I need to start off with?

I don't have a windows laptop so if you guys could tell me a suitable machine to use that would be good, it will only be used for mapping and maybe a bit of internet/storage of my maps.

Not planing on doing any mapping until I fully understand it but want the kit so I can start looking at tables and see what my car is up to, and gain a bit of understanding, I learn better by doing as opposed to sitting about reading, I tend to fall asleep reading endless text I need some visual/hands on stimulation to keep me focused, I am a man after all.

Any links to novice guides would be good too.

This guide is for classics, but alot of the algorithms carry across.

If used the manual Andy listed above, also with every thing i could get my hands on.

I am using a Mac to tune, running windows through VMware without a problem. Tuning through ESL a easy way to start as you can instantly the changes live!

To tune fuelling and boost seems relatively straight forward, Ignition is another monster all together!
If you go down the ESL route, you will find your self in very good hands in regards to any questions or problems you may have! Andy has helped me out a million times with the strangest of problems or questions!

Thanks Dan, you are always welcome. Not sure the OP even has a classic, but the control strategies are similar across the ECUs so I think it would be a handy reference.

Thanks guys, few questions.
what lead do I need and where is the best place to get one?
what sensors if any do I need.
what about det cans.

I run a mac as well, so where do I get this windows software from and am i able to use my mac normally and just the windows stuff for mapping, bit loathed to put anything windows related on my mac as in my experience it's nothing but trouble.

What car do you have? Different leads/software for different MYs.

You need a wideband lambda sensor and controller. (unless running Syvecs which has a wb controller on board I believe).

A reasonable laptop and detcans which you can make yourself quite cheaply. Posh knock analysers are also available, at a price.
