Um, surface area for a start, including depth I think. But come to think of it, I'm not at all convinced that the top mounted intercooler is as useless as some of my friends say. As you are moving cool air is pushed down into the intercooler. The only disadvantage is when you are stationary I think. But even then, a water spray kit should be able to solve it.

APS and HKS are probably some of the best (or most popular at least) for the Scoob. Don't know if anybody does one for the STi 7 but I should think they do (if only in Japan/NZ/Oz).

An oil cooler? I'm thinking of getting one in the future when I really tune my car up. Its just that there's not much point for me at the moment as the most I'll do is go on Santa Pod. Don't know how much track days would cost. If its cheapish, then I'll get an oil cooler but for now, an intercooler waterspray would do just fine.

Actual comparable figures.
Top Mount. Cruise up to 4k rpm ambient + 10 to 13 centigrade.
W.O.T. Very easy to achieve 40s c at throttle body and with continued exuberance into the 50s cent
With splitter there may have been a reduction of up to 2 c but it was marginal.
Rolling Road: Amb = 7 c End temp =55 c
APS FMIC Cruise = +1 to +3 over amb. WOT so far 26 c
R.R. AMB. 14c end temp =26c
Very impressive and benefits far in excess of what I expected.
Now rate this as 2nd best mod on my car after D/P, exhaust and induction which were all done at once.
Do not fit an oil cooler until you have an oil temp guage as you may find like me that yoo do not need one and cost is less than £50
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone.Harvey a couple of questions.1)How much extra lag did you see with the top mount2)Where have you felt the power gains3)are you running a mappable ECU4)Why did you pick the fmic that you did. Many thanks,Deep.

Hi Deep,
1) Lag negligible much against what I had been led to believe but in line with what someone else with first hand experience found.
Perhaps 50 rpm delay but not really measurable.
2)No bottom end benefits particularly noticable other than a bit smoothed out. 4.5k Like a train and 5.5k rpm WOW. Temp no longer an issue.
3) Link-BRD. The FMIC + final mapping made it all come together.
In my experience FWIW do not fit APS cold air on its own.
4)Lots of observation, questions and resear

Hi Deep,
Achieving 1bar of boost may be 50 rpm up the rev band but it is so marginal that it is not worth consideration. While others led me to believe that FMICs added lag that is not my first hand experience. Alan G fitted a FMIC before me and said there was no increase in lag. Fitting the FMIC before the Link is a good idea but realise that prior to the Link you may have taken the engines mapping requirements beyond the perameters of the standard map so exercise caution. Ring me if you want to chat. 07860 302020.

To clarify, i found a decrease in lag in my car when i went to front mount, but this appears to be due to the turbo i am using, which is recommended to be used in conjuction with a font mount.
Having said that, using a turbo more suited to a top mount can still be used with great effect with a front mount with suitable mapping of the ECU.
Owners I spoke to before buying my front mount all reported an increase in lag and disappointment with the results, but all were cured through changes to their maps.

Alan: You are spot on. That is exactly what you told me when we met but if I said that on here some birk would accuse me of trying to sell one of the two FMICs I have.
My experience is exactly as reported. The FMIC AND re-map brought everything together. I would not consider all the mods I have done then add a FMIC without the remap. The point at which I went beyond the STi6 map was with the addition of the cold air filter. After that porting the headers took the motors requirements even further.
Like I said Bobs re-map brought it all together.
Now for some more power and more importantly a few bucket loads of low down torque.
PS: Only got this car as it had enough power in the first place so I did not need to mod it.
