Default how many hours and cost to change gearbox on a WRX blob

Hi all,
My gearbox seems to be on the way out. My mechanic says I should drive it until the box gives up.

Since my missus is expecting I don't really want to take the risk of the box going and being stranded.

I haven't asked for a price from my mechanic, but he has already said he''ll have to take the engine out to do it. So won't be cheap.

My question is, how many hours would it take to swap a 5speed box on a blob and roughly how much should I expect to pay?

I'm wondering if a Scooby specialist will be cheaper than my mechanic, because they have experience and will be able to do it quicker?

As always, cheers for everyone's input

Find a proper mechanic, the Impreza is one of the easiest cars to change the gearbox on.

Any recommendations for a mechanic in the south? There are a couple I know of, but when I've called, they seem really busy. I know that's a good sign, but I would really like a mechanic who has time to actually talk to me, or work on Saturdays.

How many hours do you think the job should take or cost?

Also engine can stay in the car it does not have to come out

For a good mechanic not running in to any problems it can be done in less than 4 hours.

Clutch change (labour only) is about £150-£180 up here so should be somewhere around that figure.

Thanks guys! Really helpful.

Should be round about 4 hours Labour, which what I needed to know. Just need to find a decent mechanic now :-)

Cheers again all

Autodata says 5.5 hours for a box and clutch swap, which is what most garages use for pricing of jobs.

have you sourced another box? is it compatible with your rear diff? what condition is your clutch in? have you got fresh oil for the replacement box?

Weird why he thinks you need to take the engine out to change the gearbox!

If your doing it DIY then it IS way easier to take the engine out with the gearbox attached than crawling under the car on axel stands, also if changing the clutch DIY i'd have the engine out.

Took me about 5 hrs just to get the box and diff out, i'd have the engine out in 2hrs taking my time, and possibly less if I shake a leg with no tea and biscuit breaks.
