Default URGENT HELP gearbox noise!

Hi all,

Just got back from the RAC rally in the RB5 and the gearbox has started making a grinding/ticking/winding noise on overrun and when not accelerating (maintaining speed). I'm hoping to go again tomorrow but not sure if I should so your urgent response would be appreciated! symptoms as follows;

Performance in every gear at any rpm is completely unaffected, as is gear selection.

The pitch is related to roadspeed and not engine speed.

When in gear (most prominently 4th), if you put left/right pressure on the gearstick it makes the noise worse.

Before I left I tried to reverse but something (I thought the handbrake) was stuck and the car wouldnt move, but suddenly released itself with a bit of power.

I had a new clutch fitted about 3000 miles ago

Many thanks,
Andy

I forgot to mention; It still makes the noise when I dip the clutch when moving, and it doesn't make the noise at all when stopped. It sounds like its coming from the front of the gearbox, definitely further forward than the gearstick anyway I think...

sounds like your front diff to me. If your sure it is the front making the noise then your welcome to join my club.... I have similair issue but mine whines like a bitch in 1st and reverse and is generaly noisy in all gears when moving. My solution is to change my gearbox for a used replacement which was delivered yesturday from a fellow SN member along with the matching rear diff. Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will be along soon for you!

Thanks for your reply pedroturbo, it may be something in the front diff and that may explain why something was 'locked' somewhere in the drivetrain when the car didn't move. It sounds like a bearing the more i think about it. I didn't risk taking it to the rally today, went along in my mums 3 cylinder skoda instead haha.
Anyone else got any ideas??

Well, I got a mates mate who is a Subaru specialist to look at it today and it seems like the front diff is goosed, which he said was very rare on a 65000 mile car which is well looked after. He's going to drop the oil and from that determine whether I need a new front diff or the whole gearbox...

Iv been researching new gearbox options and I have a few queries;

I THINK my car has a prodrive quickshift as it is a PPP RB5?? How will I go about keeping the quickshift if I have to change the whole gearbox?

My gearbox code is TY754VN1AA , could I straight swap a newage bugeye/blobeye (e.g. TY754VN4AA) gearbox without needing anything else?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

i believe it is just the TY754VN part of the code that is the important part.
