You want the same diameter on the front and back, so if you're planning on using wider tyres on the back you'd want them to have a lower profile to compensate, the maths could be tricky.

Exactly as Dai says. The rolling circumference of the front and rear tyres must be within a tight tolerance or the centre diff will wind up and break.
There is an amount of tolerance, because if you have new tyres on one end and the opposite end with just about a millimetre of tread left [ same size of course ] you get away with it.
But I'd be very careful as centre diffs are quite expensive to replace.
