6 speed conversion question
Need a little advice guys done a search but still unsure. Want to drop a 6speed box in my bug wrx as I think it's time what I want to know is what exactly do I need? Do I need to change rear diff etc I've recently had an excedy clutch and lightweight flywheel would this have to be changed for a 6speed equivalent? Would it be better to get a box out of a newer car rather then one that's done a lot of miles?
All help appreciated
Cheers

Dead simple. If it's a UK car you get a UK pre 2004 non dccd box with a 3.54 final drive . If its a jap car you need to source a jap box with a 3.9 FD
All you need is the box, linkage, gearknob and propshaft and it will just go on inplace of your current box. No need to **** around with driveshafts hubs and brakes and everything else including your new clutch will swap over.
A DCCD box will go on but that complicates matters slightly.
If you move up to an R180 rear diff you will need to change the hubs and brakes too.
So the easiest combination. Is to just swap the box and leave your current diff in place.

i assume your planning more power as your buying the six speed.
the reason i would change it is the box will already be out and it saves stripping down again in the future and paying more labour, thats assuming your not doing it yourself.

Cheers tommy no not doing it myself and now I've decided to keep the car I'm going to start with the 6speed before the engine. Makes sense in the long run to cut my losses and change the clutch aswell. Thanks for your help mate

Ok guys bumping this up as the times here sooner then I thought. So what I need is
6speed box
Linkage

What are the front stub mounts? Do I need anything else?
I assume I keep the same rear diff and drive shafts, correct?
Help appreciated again guys

Lots of people over complicating this. All you need is:
UK pre 2005 non DCCD box,
six speed prop or one from an Auto wrx
Gear linkage
Cradle
gear ****.
That's it. It will mate with your current rear diff and the axle stubshafts are for the later boxes.
I've done this countless times, thats all you need!

My 5 speed AP organic clutch and flywheel has coped fine with 450bhp for over 20K miles now - first in my 5 speed box and for the last 10k miles of the 20k in a 6 speed dccd box. Don't do drag strip stuff though.

I'm running the same clutch with a Fidanza flywheel using a JDM 6 speed at 440 BHP with no issues. RCM told me this would be fine as long as I stayed away from the drag strip where I would need a twin plate anyway.

Love the JDM 6 speed the lower ratios in 5th & 6th make the car feel really responsive through all gears with the peace of mind of knowing it can take a good thrashing unlike the more fragile 5 speed.

Daz your not 100% correct not all 6 speed rear prop flanges will mate with the round flange on the R160 diff. An example of this is a hawkeye prop it has a much wider hole centre to hole centre pitch which is to big to redrill the diff disc.I am not just talking about pcd redrilling but physical size. I had this when trying to fit a hawkeye prop to my R180 pre hawkeye R180 diff. In the end I had a new universal joint of the right size for my diff fitted to the prop.
