Default Making a classic Impreza RWD

Is it as simple as lock the centre diff by weld etc and remove front diff and blank off front drive shaft holes in gearbox?
Cheers

i would not weld anything,

classic Impreza's have an open centre diff so disconnecting the front wheels (by removing the prop shaft?) will autmatically send all the power to the rear

You can buy a locking spool kit for 5 or 6 speed, about 300quid i think.

what is that locking though?

to the OP i would read here and make sure you understand what a diff does

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locking_differential

http://www.pocuk.com/faq/4x4explained.htm

http://www.lcool.org/technical/diffs/diffs.html

locking and open

before you do anything

TBh i dont know exactly how it works, a friend of mine has done the conversion to his PPG box that is going in his EJ20 powered Mk1 Escort....His understanding(from what he has read) is that even the stock 5 speed Subaru box will take a lot more power when converted to RWD than 4WD.

Both PPG and KAPS make the spool kit for the Subaru box.

Plus you will lose less power through the drivetrain if it's RWD only.

No, that will cause the front output of the diff to spin wildly, and the car not to move.

Remove gearbox, take top plate off centre diff, fill Centre Diff with stick welder. Remove front driveshafts.

Result:

You will kill lots of stock gearboxes.

The locking kits you buy are just a spline coupler that replaces the centre diff and locks input to rear output.

Front diff stays in as it then seals the front driveshaft seals, think you do need the front stub axles off the front shafts to hold the hubs together.

On a budget, follow Andy's comprehensive how too guide above! :-)

Andy, how did you find drifting with the imprezas lack of front lock?

Legacy is spot on. Are you on UKLegacy as I might be talking to one of my brothers friends without knowing it

A Legacy says, and I forgot, I split the front driveshafts and put the bells back in the front hubs to stop them collapsing.

The lack of lock is a real problem, I didn't know it at the time as it was the only car I'd ever drifted but when the pros got in and had a go they couldn't drive it. It's something you get used to but a definite disadvantage. I had a look at the team Orange cars once, they fit an N/A rack and modify the hub knuckle to overcome it.

Yes mate, whos your brother?

The lock is mainly limited by the chassis rails, obviously a flat4 is a shed load wider than an in line 4 mounted longitudinally (200sx etc) .... i got on alright in one, but hated the inevitable spins envolved in running out of lock just when you need to catch it. As you said, fine if your used to it and dont drift with too much angle, but if you jump out of a beemer or 200sx into one, it'll feel very limiting!

Spencer, owner of ESL.

I thought it was more to do with the limiting angles of the front driveshafts as with mods you can have a decent amount of lock once they have been removed.

I have a 325 now with a welder, easier to drift but I miss the effortless torque in 3rd gear! Santa Pod has been getting a bit crowded recently, the drift scene seems to have taken off over here now.

ahh - yes I see

the diff will act as if the two front wheels are lifted of the ground - i.e. power just go to the line of least resitance

total blond moment, in fact on my Landcruiser if I take the front propshaft off I would lock the diff to send all power to the rear (simply using my difflock button)

carry on

He either had a DCCD (Driver Controlled Centre Differential) Standard on the RB330 version and on the old P1s I think they were. Put rock hard tyres

My 1997 estate has been converted to RWD. They are very light on the rear end and when you start putting bigger turbos on when they kick in the **** end gets a little hairy! Great fun though!

Mines also had the hubs re drilled for awesome lock!

Did I see your wagon at Norfolk arena last year? Was it up for sale recently?
