not that I don't believe them but...
I just spoke to TSL about a downpipe for my MY00.
I asked, will a car pass the MOT with just the centre section CAT in. TSL said that the MY00 turbos don't have a centre CAT and that it only has a resonator in it.
Is this right?
Regards
Steve

The MY99 UK also has a centre cat - at least the ones I've looked at. Otherwise Prodrive are doing a roaring trade swapping a centre section with a resonator for a centre section with a resonator as part of the PPP! Is there not some funny business where the STis did, then didn't then did again? You'd have to be a bloody saint to remember which one has which in it.

Our old 99 (one on the old TSL site) was ours from new and had only the one cat in the DP .. hmmm. It doesn't seem to be straightforward. I also have a really nice MY99 in used car stock which appears to be untouched with just the one in...and a resonator.. but i have also seen with 2 when in for exhaust change.. does anyone know if there was a swap half way thru??
I really don't know now!! ..
all RB5's 2.. all p1's 2.. etc.. what about t'others?

Very weird. Any others anyone?
Could be another reason some MY99s seem quicker than MY00 not just the ECU differences? Otherwise except for wheels, paint on door handles and dash aside I thought they were mechanically identical.

Trouser,
I'm sorry if I have miss-quoted you, my phone was being a bit crap and I did loose you every now and then.
I have looked at the centre section under the car and there does seem to be a CAT just before what looks like a resonator.
I suppose what I really want to know is will the CAT that appears to be in the centre section be sufficient (spelling!) to pass an MOT or roadside test.
I really want to avoid having to change the downpipe when the car goes for its MOTs in the future.
Thanks
Steve

Reports have it that (if you really warm up your engine) it will pass the test.
Disclaimer: have not tried it myself, but know a few people that did.

Both my my99 and my00 cars had centre cats. I had a Swiss emmissions test done after decat'ing the d/p on the my00 - it passed from warm. However, that was 15 months ago - I should maybe go try again.
Trouble is now - I swapped about so much, I don't know what centre is on - PPP or OE...sniffing exhaust fumes doesn't help, lol

Chris,
No, not really. My RB5 (MY99 May) had 2 cats. I just recently changed the centre for the PPP one and they both looked identical from the outside.
The only way I could tell them apart, was to shine a torch down the resonator part. The catted one had the honeycomb of the cat, the PPP just a dirty great big hole down the middle

I've got a MY99, March registered.
There is only 1 small bulge in the centre pipe, about half way through. It is currently in my garage. I will post a pic at the weekend.
Its curently got a straight through pipe fitted, but thats not important right now.

My MY00 definately has a cat and after it is a resonator(labelled PM6 I think).
My PPP centre section from an MY99 PPP has the cat matrix removed. It also has a slightly larger resonator(labelled PM7 I think).
You can differentiate the PPP centre from the STD centre by looking at for the larger resonator on the Prodrive part. You can also see the welds where Prodrive had some fun. The Prodrive centre also has the one half of the cat heatshield removed.

From the outside its difficult to tell if there is a cat in the centre section - its only possible if you look down the pipe. The cat has 'baffles' accross the pipe, whereas , if you look at an STi 5 centre section, although it has the bulge, there is nothing accross the pipe, it is effectively acting as another silencer.

My grey WRX MY00 appeared to have a cat, had the cat can inline but when it was replaced no cat. Still got it in the garage I can photgraphy and post it but I think its pretty much the same as the PPP centre section ie. the standard catless STI centre.
