Question

Hi.
I have a 93WRX and occasionaly the power steering makes a rather worrying whining noise when parking etc.
I have recently fitted 17" wheels, is this normal as the load on the rack has probably increased?
Any info would be greatfuly recieved.
Thanks, Rob.

Thanks Tizard, but Im afraid things have deteriorated now.
Pump is leaking and whining all the time
Going to try and get hold of a 2nd hand one.

Anyone know how easy it would be to swap.
Im pretty handy with the spanners, managed to change the cambelt without any probs.
Reakon I could do it?

Cheers, Rob.

Right, Ive got the pumpoff now, on the hard pipe that fixes to the pump, there is a tiny plastic seal that has split. Subaru dealer says they are not found on UK models.
Anyone know anything about it?

I'm pretty sure they are. Can't really tell from your description. Mine was leaking sometime back I replaced the 'O' ring and voila.

Question

Is this the o ring that sits on the bit of the reservoir that slides into the pump? Changed mine a few weeks back with an o ring from motorworld and it hasn't cured it.....reckon I need the proper Subaru item!!??!!

Yeah, it stinks!
Found that power steering fliud was jetting out of the seal around the sensor at the back of the pump. All that noise seemed to be caused by air in the system, the pump its self is actualy fine.
My 2nd hand pump turned up anyway, so I fitted it and everythings OK now.
Cheers for the help, Rob.

Seal on sensor behind pump eh????? I'll have to check it out....not just the o ring on the reservoir that I changed

If it cures the smell I'm happy

To check if it is the seal on the sensor, put it on full lock and hold it there, get someone to help so you can see if it's squirting out of the sensor wire. You can get the seal and wire from subaru parts as I've seen them and usually cost around £60 for both, and they do fit imports as well.
Check both the O rings 1st and the one on the res stem should be plyable not solid, if solid, replace, the other is under the res cradle. To get rid of the smell, just spray some gunk around the area on a warm engine on rinse with a bucket of hot soapy water.

Theres one underneath the resrvoir cradle as well? I knew I should've taken it off to check when I did the o ring on the stem .

Will do the sensor test today and see what happens..........
