Default Lightweight flywheels

A possible clutch change is coming up on my Turbo 2000 (with 250bhp);is it worth fitting a lightweight flywheel at the same time?

Do you notice any difference in engine performance to justify the expense?

Fitting a lightweight flywheel is a reliable way of increasing you engines performance. Your engine will become more free reving, meaning faster spool up and a small gain in BHP.

One of the best £ for £ mods you can do to your car IMHO.

Off the top of my head the OEM flywheel weighs 10-12kgs. A aftermarket lightweight flywheel will weigh around 5kgs.

By significantly reducing the rotational mass it enables to engine to rev more freely and accelerate better. If you are towing heavy weights (eg caravans etc), then you are better off with the OEM flywheel weight. For anyone else, it is a great upgrade.

Saves having to send your old flywheel off for a skim and works out pretty good value once you factor the cost of having that done and being able to resell your old flywheel.

We have some great offers on these, available as packages with Exedy clutches and also on their own.

I had an API lightened flywheel fitted to my car a couple of years ago, and when I drove off it felt like a completely different car.

My car was running around 350hp at the time, but it felt like it had got a turbo upgrade rather than a clutch + flywheel change when I drove off

Very, very happy with mine!

The APi lightened Subaru original flywheels are sold exchange. The ' new ' one is 7Kg's which is the homologated weight for a rally car. This is one of our most popular products. Single piece flywheels and two piece flywheels weight different amounts so the gain can be either 3 Kg's or 5 Kg's.

Most people do not need a fancy steel flywheel with a regular organic clutch, a modified standard is perfectly adequate. APi pays the return shipping charge for the exchange unit. So there is no additional cost.

And you need to be careful of some ' steel ' flywheels that have the ring gear teeth cut out of the steel billet. The teeth are not hardened and in the future you will have starter problems. When depends upon how often you start your car obviously.

Call if I can help. David
