ive done it on a classic on axle stands. you need two people and its a complete ars3 to do.
avoid it if at all posible. should only be done on the side of the road or on a driveway out of desperation.

I have had 5 speed boxes in and out of my RA on axle stands several times. It is a bit of a pain but not that bad. Just make sure you have decent axles stands and get the car as high as possible. I use a trolley jack to take the weight to lower down and then again to get up to about the right height before man handling it into position. i have done it on my own but its best with two people. Once the box is out clean up the dowels and grease them a little, also grease the bottom studs helps a little.

I have also fitted a 6 speed using axle stands, now that is a PITA.

Nope neither, this is how i have done it. With the box on a decent garage trolley jack resting just behind the squarish peg at the bottom of the box, push the trolley jack forward so the box is roughly in line then jack the box up on the trolley jack until it is just about located on the bottom two studs then while lying on your back next to the trolley jack manouvere the jack while pushing forward so the box locates as far as possible on the bottom two studs. Then its a case of moving the jack backwards to the tail case to then lift the rear to give a proper angle of dangle to fully engage the box with the clutch by again pushing the trolley jack forward with your feet while lifting and pushing the box from the tail case end. Sounds rough but if you get it close to the bottom studs and lined up properly before lifting it onto the studs you dont actualy have the full weight and you dont have to move it far. The hardest part is keeping the box on the jack as you move it, thats why you need a proper garage trolley jack with a decent wide jacking pad.
I wouldnt chose to do it this way but needed the box in quickly and wasnt prepared to wait for help.
