Help! Poss rear diff is gone
Hello all
I have a version 4 sti saloon.
Yesterday i started hearing a knocking coming from the rear of the car. Today on the way home from work it got a lot worse.
It doesn't start till about 30mph. When your foot is off the accelerator in gets worse and then its awful when you dip the clutch.
I've removed everything from the boot (Not something in there knocking)
I've checked the wheels, disc and callipers, No movement.
I put my hand across the diff and there is some oil around it.
There is no vibration coming through the steering wheel.
Any ideas what it is?
I've recently had the car up on a jack at each point for quite a long time while painting callipers. Could i have knackered something that way?
If it is the diff, how much are they fitted?
Rich (FB Tuning, if you're reading this, do you have any time available tomorrow?)
Thanks in advance

Check the suspension, the struts and the top mountings in particular. check the exhaust hasn't moved or broken a rubber and is rubbing or catching and also that you haven't picked up a stone between the disk and pads or is interfering catching on the disk. anf finally a collapsed/loose wheel bearing????

As said I would be surprised if it was the diff, sounds more like drive shaft. It can also be something as innocent as the diff mount bushes as these knock in a way that makes you think its the diff as its all connected. Ive just solved my knocking that I thought came from the diff, it ended up being the HID leveller arm so just took it off.

This is very embarassing but..... The wheel was loose. Thought it was the diff as i rubbed my hand around it and there was a bit of oil there.
What happened was (Jethro).... I had my brakes done by my neighbour who used to be a "Break specialist". A week before i had the wheels refurbed.
What is believed to have happened is.... there was powder coat where the wheel nuts sit. On tightening them it squashed the powder coat. They then got warm, powder coat disappeared, wheel nut becomes loose. Obviously i checked this first and didn't find anything wrong.
I rang Rich this morning, he was more than sympathetic and told me to come up. He went across the whole car checking that everything was ok. He found that all the callipers were loose, air in the brake lines and a couple of other things i've already forgot.
Rich was absolutely spot on. I'm really chuffed with what he has done in such short space of time. He was totally genuine and i've already planned to go back next week for a full laser alignment and rolling road test.
P.s Sorry for being a plonker

lol, Ive been wrong on an initial assessment more times than Ive been right. The main thing is that it wasnt anything major. I wish that was all that was wrong when my HID leveller clonked and cost me £300 in parts.
Pleased you got it sorted.

Cheers mate, so was i.
It's funny, i was miserable thinking about having to spend about 1k on fixing a massive problem.
Now i'm trying to justify in my head spending £1k on performance bits as i fixed the problem so cheaply
