Default 3rd Gear just gone bang

Well thats just about rounded off a sh*t day. loud bang and no 3rd gear now just another neutral and a constant rattle, which im guessing is the bits of broken gear rattling about inside the box. As i understand it theres a number of different gearboxes it could have fitted (cars a 1994 import) Question is whats my best course of action? fit another secondhand box or is there somthing stronger i can rebuild mine with? Cheers guys an gals .

^^^cost effective =No,fit and forget=Yes
To do the complete conversion you would need the box,box cradle, linkage, prop shaft, drive shafts and hubs with rear brakes which would set you back around the 2-2.5k mark fella.

for 6 speed u need the folowing:
6 speed box
matching diff
propshaft
gear linkage
rear drive shafts
bigger rear hubs
discks and pads to go with that obviously
and 2 pot rear calipers

ur lookin at around £2500

most people sell kit with out the rear hubs and 2 pots and its no good without it as the standeed rear shafts dont fit 6 speed diff

i may consider sellin mine or if ur intrested i mite take out my p1 gear box to sell to u with matchin diff, and install the 6 speed my self???

How do you explain that, if you get a gear x rayed, shot peened and heat treated the only way to destroy is by sheer power/torque.

The metal has had all of the negative point ironed out and the gear is STRONGER.

Ive seen this in the ford cosworth boxes, 3rd gear goes and you can get shot peened set and there are mint.

aye but PPG's are not only expensive they are sh*te! I wouldnt have one given especially for the power I'm running.

If he specifiically wants a five speed I'd suggest a scoobyclinic gearkit but thats overkill for most and cost prohibitive that said I'd have one over anything but a hawkeye six speed.

As said six speed is the way to go and can be had for circa £1000-1200 cheaper than a PPG

My completely standard early uk six speed has coped with 600bhp approxiamately 30 full bore launches and does 10 second quarters

Now how many PPGs would cope with that?

As for the kit required to do the job it depends on your current car.
If its a UK car and you source a pre hawkeye six speed then you just need the box, linkage cradle and prop shaft. It will fit your current diff and your current drive shafts will fit

i can think of several ppg box's that have taken it for longer than that, then i can think of several 6 speeds that havn't either.

this is the thing, you know and i know that all you need to do is slightly miss a gear and it may let go. Any box you run will eventualy break when you push it that hard, nothing is indestructable.

standard car count? well near as 305bhp, i drive my dads bug sti with a 6 speed in it from time to time. i find the ratio's too short for my liking.

but the ratios thing is a personal kinda thing, if that makes sence

As mentioned it all depends on what power and more importantly torque you are running or aiming for. What is the code of your current box?

Newage TY754 boxes are a good cheap upgrade. from the classic TY752 boxes. You can pick ip a TY754VN4AA box from a UK blobeye WRX for around £300-£400 and matching diff £100 and it will slot straight in. If you are planning on running greater than 350 lbs/ft of torque then maybe its time to go 6 speed.

If you get a UK six speed box with a 3.54 rear diff you do not need to change your rear shafts and hubs etc as a 3.54 R160 diff can be easily found from a UK newage WRX and all that is required is the prop to diff flange redrilled to suit the six speed prop PCD a job you can do yourself in 10 mins, I have done it a few times.

I think its harsh to say PPG kits are ****e daz but I agree the cost now makes it difficult to justify over a 6 speed. The only PPG kit I would take over a 6 speed would be a straight cut dog box for track only use.
