But being a JDM box it will be short geared compared to a UK set up, you might find yourself absent mindedly trying to change into 7th gear occasionally.

AND YES, he will need a 3.9 R160 rear diff as that will be the cheaper option rather than upgrading to STI rear hubs and calipers and so on.
Sorry, got it wrong this time.

Gosh!! what a question. I expect that by the time it is bought and fitted, around the £3000 mark. But that depends entirely upon how much it costs to buy the conversion ' kit ' in the first place.
The words cheap and 6 speed conversion don't fit in the same sentence together. The technical term is ' Oxymoron ' [ look it up ]

could be a idea to go for a older 6 speed box without DCCD it will save you a chunk of money. not sure how rare these are as RCM have sorted my one out but its an idea. DCCD is only for the strip or rallying.

1. Early boxes have weaker synchros, mine was sixth gear !
2. I have just changed as a 50:50 split is not ideal for "fun".
3. A built PPG or similar will soon eclipse the cost of a six speed set-up.
I just need to work out if I need a "nasty" plated rear diff. for mine next.
If I ever get the thing screwed back together...
dunx
P.S. You're getting there young Bez

I was hoping around half that, I think i may just have to live at 350/360 until i win the lottery
Thanks for the replies, and Bez can't wait to see how it all turns out after its forged, it has to be one of the most powerfull WRX's out there.

Thats assuming you can get a 6 speed - I couldnt so had to get the PPG rebuilt when 5th went.....
then again I have a Forester STI with a 6 speed box and hate it..... its also much heavier
on 350/350 I'd just have the gearbox rebuilt.. in fact much less than 450bhp unless your tracking it then you dont need an uprated box... as long as you dont abuse it with standing starts off the line
I need to be Arnold Swarzennager (ok dodgy spelling) to change the gears on my PPG when it gets hot on the track............ and the helical is noisy and always was

There are plenty STis that are running well over 500.
If your thinking about rebuilding your 5 speed, I have a very trick platted Front diff for it,(£450) the diff has only done 50 miles, and they are over a grand when new. it was in my 5 speed dog dox, (hawkeye) when some of the gears wanted to go solo, and make a run for freedom.
I also have a new Push style clutch with lightweight flywheel that is good for 600bhp for sale,(Hawkeye 5 speed) open to sensible offers.
As far as you only running 350 bhp
Last year in the scoobysprint championship, I got 3rd in modified priveteers when running std TD04 with 300 BHP, but the gearbox, diffs and ASTs made all the differance.
So 350 is still a hell of a lot of power.
Look at your tuned Ford, ****rons,Vaux's there top tuners are only getting 350 to 400,

6 speed conversion
Hi
I would like to fit this same set up to a 98 classic so i take it that i shall have the same problems, you mention extracting the stubs from the gearbox for the front drive shafts then i can use my standard shafts. And can you say what sort of power can the r160 take?
If you have any more information this would be much appreciated plus what are the NPS issues.
Regards
Bwanaiguana

Scoobyclinic make their own gearset these days, not PPG and it is a perfect piece of kit, far better than PPG.
We had one and fitted it for a customer a few weeks back and it went together a dream.
It is also cheaper than a PPG set.
Form a queue at Wingerworth.

Yeah it sort of like calling any vacuum cleaner a ' Hoover ' .
Yes it is an option up to 500 hp, above that the forged gears can be troublesome. And it is the sheer size of the 6 speed gears that take the power.
One of the cars we look after with a 6 speeder at 560hp or so twists the input shaft after a season of drag work - but otherwise behaves perfectly.
Fixing synchros can be a problem depending upon how bad the damage to the actual dog teeth on the synchro hubs and the relevant gear is.
The carbon coated rings are only £30.00 each [ 3 of them ] But hubs are about 130 each and the gears anywhere between 110 each up to 150 each.
A regular cost with the box supplied out of the car is usually £750.00 + VAT assuming no damage to the centre viscous diff, if you have that set up.
Call me to talk it through if you like Steve,
