Noisey Followers
#1
Hi
When looking at my engine, the left hand bank of followers are making a bad noise (Ratling).
My questions are:
Can you tell which ones are ratling so i don't have to purchase the complete set for that side?
How easy if the job, getting in and replacing the nackered ones?
Any Help will be greatly received

Like John says, depends on the MY, and version. The followers changed from hydrolic to solid late '97. UK, and WRX's had solid lifters, with "over bucket" shims. STi's had solid "under bucket shims".
If you have "OBS's" you should be able to re-shim the worn/noisy ones. If you have "UBS's" the followers will need replacing, because the shims don't wear.
Mark.

I'm not familiar with the older, hydrolic heads, but all pre '97 cars, including STi's have them.
I suspect that the older heads may need worn parts replacing.

DG, If its your legacy, then the heads are completely different to an impreza, so make no comparisons. Lifters are a bit of a bollox to change, coz they are tiny wee fu*kers, and very difficult to do with the engine in the car. Better to take the engine out. I think they are about £26 each. Ive heard that stripping and cleaning the oilways in the heads can cure, but obviously a bit of work. Its a common legacy problem, and the first thing id try, is using Mobil 1 motorsport 15/50 oil. I would advise agains flushing the engine, coz any deposits may work their way into a lifter, and really clog it up. Sometimes its just best to leave gunk were it is in an engine, where it can do no harm.
A MY94 WRX would, as far as I know, have hydraulic lifters, of the bucket style, with the camshaft operating 1:1 ratio cam/valve lift. Legacies use an actual cam follower, with a hydraulic ballstud, onto which the follower site at one end, with the other resting over the valve. The camshaft is positioned over the top of the follower, therefore there is not a direct 1:1 ratio of cam vs valve lift.. The simplest way I can describe the legacy, is that it looks like a ford 2.0 sohc pinto, as used in cortina/capri/escort/granada/sierra.

Quick question:
Anyone know what followers I would have on my 96 Sti Ra??
Solid ones for Sti's? no??
And does the fact that they are solid mean they wont be as noisey as hydrolic ones ?
And just out of curiosity has anyone paid to get it done ? Costly ??
Ive been told the hydrolic followers have rubber seals which hold oil inside the follower, as the seals ware they leak oil and thus allowing a friction = noise.
So does anyone know of detremental effects of this, everyone doesnt like the noise but whats the damage if any??

If it is an sti it should have solids, some of these wrx early type will have hydrolics any type of lifter should have a convex shape to the top of it just visable to the eye, this helps to turn them in service and even any wear, but as time has gone on and manufacturing costs are cut this is not always the case. Ive seen some of these that have not been turning and have shocking wear and are fit for the bin. If thay are internaly dirty the oil will not entre them and thay will rattle, if thay are left to do this for a long period of time camsharft wear will ocour. If on a budget then get the hydro lifter with the flat face up and bang it on a flat block of metal and the internals will come out and proper cleaning can be done 9 times out of 10 this will cure the problem, thay may rattle for up to 10 mins when you start the car again but this is just trapped air and when thay have bled them selfs thay should be silent. This can only be done if the lifter is not worn on the face, i would replace them myself but have got people out the **** before this way.
