Question Rear Driveshaft Inner Boot

MOT today and tester noticed a slight weep from this boot - could be a split developing.

MOT passed however, but I'd like to sort it out.

I can, even in my advancing years, swing a spanner at most things ... is this an easy job?

Unbolt, pull out, new boot on, pack with grease, bolt back on? Or is it more complicated?

Pain that there is no Haynes Manual for these things!

Don't think it's as easy as that mate, getting my rears done soon and was told it's a pain in the ***.

its fairly easy but time consuming job to do, just disconnect the hub from the roll bars etc so it can swing out then remove the driveshaft from the diff, refit with new seals on the diff etc.

if you do a search on here there are links to the genuine service manual that you can download for free from iirc Rapidshare.

I don't mind Time Consuming .... does the boot have to be forced over the larger diameter block on the driveshaft - or can the boot be replaced simply? If you understand?

Back in the day there were boots which came split - you wrapped it around and glued the seam .... never used them, never had a boot split on me, are these marketed still - any good?

the inboard end of the driveshaft comes out of the cv joint iirc. but you can still get split boots, there made by bailcast, you can get them from most motor factors, the last one i got was from Camberley Auto Factors

So, are you saying that the inboard boot is easy to fix with a one piece?

Coming to the split boots - thanks for the name ... have you had success with them? 20 or so years ago they weren't very good at all ... but adhesives have moved on a lot since then.

yes the cv joint is held on the shaft with a wire circlip, i used a large hammer and a drift to knock it off.

The split boots work well if you glue the seam properly, they use a black cyanocrilate glue with a tongue & groove seam.

If I unbolt the CV joint from the Axle will it just come out, or do I need to do anything else? I'm wondering how far the splined shaft goes into the Axle and if there is enough clearance just to pull it out?
