Best bet is to get a secondhand box and fit that. You could go to an autobox specialist and get your one reconditioned.
Whilst the work is being done it would be a good idea to check the splines for the clutch packs, these are in the transfer case located on the end of the auto box and this takes the power to the rear diff.
Inside are some clutch plates operated by a solenoid (Duty c) which adjusts the power split front and rear whilst you are driving. Trouble is either the solenoid goes (flashing power light on dash 16 times I think?) or the clutch plates wear grooves in the clutch hub which makes them stick. Both scenarios produce torque bind when you turn tight corners. The rear wheels try to hop and skip.
If its not doing it now it will later on. Only effects autos as manuals dont have the clutch pack arrangement.
The transfer case can be removed on its own without removing the gearbox but whilst the whole lot is out you might as well. Gearboxes do come up on ebay range from £150 to £350.
I think its possible to fit a manual box as well but don't know whats involved,

Just wondering have u checked the fluid and level because they are tempremental with low and burnt fluid . You need the car running to check the fluid level and there are two marks hot and cold . you fluid should be red and not smell burnt .The autos are a good motor when woking lol

Under bonnet, look on the offside of gearbox (as though you were sitting in the car) and you will see a dip stick. Levels are on the stick, pull it up out of the gearbox.
If in doubt change the gearbox oil, not that expensive to do.

Hi if 4th gear is gone too the problem sounds like "high clutch pack gone"
this is quite an easy repair for an auto transmission shop but I wouldnt try it by the roadside ! unless youve spilt an autobox before ??

I take it in "D" car pulls off in 1st changes to 2nd then slips forever in 3rd ?

Drop the gearbox out of car yourself, basic tools & a car jack, deliver to a local auto transmissions shop ( with torque converter this is very important ! )

should cost significantly less than £200 to strip repair & rebuild for you if the clutch pack is all thats required which sounds likely,

reverse the removal process job done.

Thats exactly what I did a couple of years ago, been fine since....

buying an "alegedly" good box off e-barf is a risky business !

Low gearbox oil or your torque converter, either way if you run it for too long then you may also have to pay out for a new gearbox, and that will cost you an arm and a leg
