What's that lever for?!
Hi guys, new owner of a secondhand wagon, 98 non turbo. Silly question to you lot but what IS that lever for next to the gearstick and how do you use it?
I guess it's like an overdrive unit, which as I understand gives you an extra higher set of gears for high speed driving, motorways, etc - but is it perhaps a 2WD / 4WD switch? I hold the clutch down to change it, that's right isn't it? Will I get different fuel economy or performace depending on the position? I found out today with the lever forward I only get 25mpg!

That's what I'm thinking, high/low gears found on wagons and estate leggy's.
Park, neutral, push in clutch and then select ratio.
Down position id for normal driving, Hi, pulled up is the Lo, for driving up a steep grade or sand as the manual says

Thanks guys. I have to get a manual from the scrap yard! So to confirm, Hi (pushed down) is the normal driving position and Lo (pulled up) is a super-low gear range for use on slippy ground or where you need greater traction? Does your manual say anything else? Do you know how the system actually works and whether it would affect fuel economy?

i wouldn't advise using lo range for long times, its meant to be used in slippery areas such as wet fields or very snowy conditions so you get less slip due to lower speeds.
