Question

Can anybody please explain what one is and how it works?

Do you need a turbo'd car to fit one? What are the advantages / disadvantages?

Cheers all

James

It is a forced induction system powered off the engine rather than the exhaust gases like a turbo. So it is parasitic, but does not have the lag of a turbo waiting for sufficient exhaust flow. Most cars are either supercharged or turbocharged, but both can be done. Try a google search on supercharger and you will get hundreds of pages.

strictly speaking a turbo is a form of supercharger, only one that is driven by the exhaust.

A supercharger as most people refer to it should be referred to as a mechanical supercharger, but then that would be really ****, so I would never point such a thing out.
