On the drivers side of the engine bay is a back plastic cyclinder with two hose's feeding into it one small on and a larger one which has what appears to be a fuel filter on it. On the top of the plastic tank are the words "Fuel purge tank". Does anyone know the purpose of this device? as I have removed it a couple of times and it always appears empty and on one occasion I forgot to connect one of the hoses leading to it and the car ran as normal. If it was possible I would like to remove this altogether but dont really know its purpose so for the mean time have left it as standard does anyone have any ideas?

May be for fuel vaporization?

One pipe comes from the fuel tank, where it's connected internally to the fuel return line. The other line leads to the inlet manifold via a non return valve.
Could it be that the fuel tank vents via this 'purge tank' into the manifold rather than via the fuel filler cap ?

Cheers Moray, Is this just an import feature ? Is it possible to remove the canister, blank the manifold pipe and then let the fuel tank vent via the cap ?

thanks

Ok so it is possible to just remove the plastic cyclinder???? and block the hoses off ? or do the pipes have to be re plumbed? its right in the way of where I have built my cold air box so it would be a good advantage to get it out of the way! cheers for the help

There is a purge control solenoid valve fixed to the underside of the inlet manifold... which is A) a bu88er to get too and B) something that will probably need to be disabled or plumbed somewhere sensible if you wish to remove the e.e. control system.

Aaah I wondered where that valve was, I know it was controlled by the ECU but couldn't find it !
That's it then it's getting ripped out and the vent pipe terminated back at the fuel tank somewhere. I have a small filter that will be perfect for putting in the end of the vent line in some dry corner of the chassis.

Thanks for that , interesting to know the details on this. I have to take my intake manifold off soon anyway so this will give me a good chance to have a look. can the purge control solenoid valve simply be removed and the vent pipe plumbed elsewhere ? Cosie Convert let me know how you get on if you do this mod before me , likewise If I do it in the near future I will keep you posted of any probs associated with doing it .... Cheers

Just talked to someone in the local Subaru dealer workshop and he said it was indeed a breather for the fuel rail, he didnt know a great deal about how to get rid of it he aid you could just try bypassing the chamber but noted that you might get a bit of a petrol smell. hrmnm there must be a good effective and simple way to get around this.

The valve is present on MY97 UK, the STI3 and onwards, I believe.

If you have a carbon canister, there may be a valve elsewhere, or maybe subaru chose to take active control of the system from 97 onwards. Sorry, I didn't know it wasn't present on the older manifold.
