How noisy should rear diff/drivetrain be?
HI guys this is my 1st 4WD car and I love it, its a 2000 Classic Impreza Turbo but my questions is are these cars normally pretty noisy from the back end mine just kind of whirrs a lot regardless of speed and is the same with the clutch dipped (at speed) it doesnt sound like there is anything nasty going on no clunking grinding etc.Changed rear diff oil and the right amount came out and nothing nasty in the oil.As I have never had a 4Wd car before not sure how much noise is transmitted through into the cabin from the prob diff etc..Thanks in advance..

The subaru rear diffs are prone to whining (not sure about whirring), I know a chap who fixed for by stripping and resetting the bearing preload, and so my personal opinion is that the rear diff casing is so stiff there is no distortion, so the bearing preload is very small, a tiny amount of wear and it looses preload and whines, reset the preload, and no whine.

i think mine whirs/whines, -- although it could be the wheel bearings
worse when cold -- seems to go to a large degree when hot
its in the garage at the mo having a new cambelt, I have asked to advise me on what they think it is

The link below might shed some light. Apparently alot of Subarus have this problem.

Whining is common, whirring is commonly bearings, they tend to last for a while making a noise, but can damage hub/shaft if they fail more completely.
Whining from passengers when your enjoying yourself is also common!

mmm rear diff
the mechanic drove the car (taking me back home - just down the road) and he was pretty sure rear diff (as i am too)
he said if it’s the wheel bearings -- you can usually alter the sound coming from them by shifting the weight of the car about as you drive it
it doesn't seemed to have got any worse -- and it seemed to appear just after i had the tyres changed in late Jan
I have purchased a 2nd hand diff and will swap when I get some time -- it seems to have quietened down just in the last week or so (or maybe I just filter the sound out)
