Whining when lifting off / braking
Any ideas what this could be? Once the car has got warm and been driven briskly, I get a loud high pitched whining noise when lifting off or braking.
The noise goes away when I press the clutch and seems to be related to engine speed, rather than road speed and isn't specific to one particular gear. I think it also whines under acceleration, but it's a lot quieter (and could be something completely unrelated / normal - car hasn't been completely 'right' for any length of time since I got it, so I've got no idea what's a normal noise and what isn't).
If I'm just pootling to and from work (few miles through town, always in traffic) then the loud noise doesn't happen.
Car is a Legacy GTB, but it shares gearbox etc with STi 5 Imprezas.
Oh I also get monumental clutch judder if trying to pull away 'normally'... I can crawl away or launch the car and it's ok, but driving normally is tricky unless I use about 3000RPM and loads of clutch slip.

I don't think it can be a diff problem - the pitch of the noise changes with engine revs, if it was diff or the output side of the gearbox surely it'd change with road speed instead?
Haven't checked the rear diff, but the gearbox oil level is definitely ok. I've just replaced the viscous coupling centre diff so have refilled the box and checked the oil level since to make sure I got it right.

LOL gf normally complains that I drive like a grandad... I tried explaining that you don't have to drive it like you stole it everywhere, but she won't listen and then complains that her 23 year old, supercharged MR2 breaks a lot
