6 speed conversion....better than 5 speed to drive?
Folks, hopefully lifting my 6 speed newage gearbox next week along with auto prop shaft and linkage etc to go into my classic RB5 in late April
Now i have seen many threads on here about 6 speeds in to a classic, but i would like some feedback from people that have done the conversion to see what yous think
I have a few questions here:
- How big a difference was it when you first drove the car again after the conversion, i know the 6 speed is a lot heavier, is it noticable or did the car instantly feel better on the road?
- Does the car drive much better, whats the gearing like compared to the five speed, did it take much getting used to?
- Would you recommend the conversion?
My car is currently running a TD05 turbo, estimated power is 350bhp but i hope to be building a big spec, 500bhp+ engine for next year so im interested to see what you guys have to say about the 6 speeders in a classic
Thanks
Kevin

Depends on whether it is a JDM box or UK (also the later 6 speed boxes are geared for the 2.5 lump)
My experiences of the conversion is as follows, JDM 01 box btw:
The ratios are superb for trackwork/B roads, there is always a gear for every situation.
Acceleration is awesome now, but you will be changing gear a lot!
if you have the JDM box, 70 mph will now be at 3k revs instead of 2.6k - doesn't sound a lot but makes a difference to the drone on a motorway.
I did notice the heavier box when it was fitted, but the car felt more planted on the road.
All in all a great conversion & atleast I have no worries about it exploding from the torque.

had a 6 speeder put into my classic at API.
not sure what six speed it is but cars feels good.
it seems to drop in boost on gear changes and pull better than the old five speed.
0-60 is abit annoying as you gota get into third to get there.
on the case for more power then c how it feels.

Mines will be the UK spec gearbox so it will suit the UK rear diff in my RB5, dont want to have to changes rear diffs and everything.
Think I have one sorted with linkage, auto prop shaft etc, so looking forward to seeing what the improvements are
Any of you running a UK spec six speed with a 2 litre lump?

Erm, most of them are made like that
Two friends of mine don't like the frenetic activity of having to cope with an extra gear (both now VAG diesel six speed owners !) mine pulls from about 3500 to 7500 rpm and it's pretty punchy, 2002 STI.

P.S. STI six speed clutch gave up at 360 ft.lb.

Just put a UK 6 Speed in my RB5
Did the conversion myself and yes the box is heavier but not noticeable when fitted....im only running 300 horses
First impressions good, Accelaration feels quicker even tho im changing gears more and shorter...6 gear is going to be nice on the motorway as its dropped a few RPMs at motorway cruising speed, cant really remember what 100mph was in my old box but im sure 6 gear has dropped approx 300RPM at 100mph
Only draw back is the height of the gearstick but that may improve when i get a 6 speed ****.
Your welcome to a blast in mine if your near oxford
Oh one thing if you get the gearbox make sure the salvage yard leave the shafts in the front diff (not the drive shafts but a small spline shaft) this will make sense if they remove them as you will have a hole in the front diffs.
I had this problem at 8pm on a saturday with mine but managed to track some dummy shafts down and they just knock into the diff, then your original driveshafts go over them with a rollpin to secure

as susgested some folks can't get on with the ratios in a 6 speed, don't think i would. i went ppg rout in the end and stuck with a 5 speed, tbh im glad i did.

Good feedback on the six speed conversion on this thread. Will be doing it at some point in the future myself. Other priorities first, though! Must say, I'm impressed that the std 5 speed is holding up so well with 343ft lbs to contend with, even though I do drive with mechanical sympathy!
I've probably just doomed it now!

Well folks, got my 6 speed with all bits/linkage, only problem is im missing the lift-up collar and pin which fits on the gearstick for selecting reverse....tried Subaru for the collar and pin, bearing in mind the collar is a small plastic part, they wanted £240 FFS....to fit the top of the gearstick here which puls up the cable in the shaft for reverse:
....so im now left with the option of getting another full linkage with all parts included at a price of £150, or go b4lls out and get the sti/prodrive complete quickshift kit at a cost of £300+!!
Is anyone using one of these quickshifts at all, or could tell me do they come complete with ALL parts including gearstick and lift-up collar etc??
Where could i get one apart from Subaru with thier crazy prices
The box is a lot larger and heavier alright as i found out when i got it into the back of the van:
Cheers

No mate, as far as i know i got the two driveshafts in the picture along with the box because my own ones wouldnt fit cuz the box was an 04 one??
Do the shafts for that box that came with it not just fit straight into the box? I thought i only needed the stub shafts if i was using a gearbox that would allow the use of my 99 RB5 shafts??

The stub shafts are used to connect your front driveshafts to the box, the rear driveshafts will not fit your rear diff, as they are thicker and designed to be fitted with an R180 rear diff.
However if it is a UK 6 speed, you will not need the rear drive shafts as your standard rear setup will work fine but you will need to buy the front stub shafts and circlips for the fronts.
