Question

A Question - still got a very notchy gearbox on the 22B, Dealer palming me off saying that there is clutch dust on the gearbox splines that is causing it to stick. Went to TSL yesterday to get the geometry checked (thats another story - it was way out!!) and they changed the gearbox oil which has improved things a little - one would also think thus disproving my dealers claim. My technical knowledge is limited here but definately think that the local dealer is lifting my leg, can some one advise? Car is a type UK under warranty with 46K on the clock any other owners with similar troubles?
Regards
Geoff

Geoff,

What did Paul or Graham have to say at TSL? If you've taken the 22B to our 'local' dealer I'm suprised they didn't try and sell you a new STI - it would cure the problem, not the point I know!

Sorry though I all I can say is if you want a more local inspection a good friend of mine runs a gearbox/transmission business and they work on a few scoobs. Let me know if you want his number.

Sorry but that is cmplete crap...... dust on the splines, they're taking the p1ss out of you.

Having siad that, some 22B's are noted for the appalling OEM (exedy) clutch's, this is a perfect description of that problem.

One of our custmers' box was so stiff, he snapped the gear selector fork trying to force the lever into 1st gear!

I've heard of a couple that have had synchro ring problems, with notchy 4th gear making it almost impossible to shift into 4th from 5th. It was a gearbox out, replace synchro rings and re-assemble job to fix.

I'll also move this one to drivetrain.

Thanks Guys - I also think it is the synchro rings - poss quickshift.
Have an AP clutch fitted 20,000mls could this be a symptom of it wearing?

This problem can almost only be caused by Synchro's.

You can get treatments for gearboxes to reduce notchy gear changes, what it is are the synchro rings not locking up properly. Lighter viscous gearbox fuild will help but not fix, which will be what they did for you.

Redline gearbox oils are increadible for exactly this problem you have raised, which is the closet option you will have short of pulling the box and replacing the synchros
