Question

Hello all! My first post, and it's in Drivetrain....not a particularly good sign!
Anyway, I hope I'm being paranoid (I've only had the car for a week), but listening to the engine on tick-over and light revs when stood, there is a definate light "knocking" coming from the engine. Could it just be tappets or something?....sorry, not very mechanically minded

The car is a 98MY Terzo with FSSH, but 80000k on the clock (could it be wear?). No modifications, as yet.

Please help as, if something is wrong, I'd like to get it done on warranty, and go armed with some facts.....

Thanks in advance, Owen

Owen,

I doubt you have piston slap. It's probably the normal tappet noise. Here's a sound file of piston slap provided by Alan Leslie, a member of this bbs. Have a listen. It will probably put your mind at rest.

Owen,

Hope the sound on file wasn't the same as yours, but if it was and the noise is only apparent WHEN COLD, going away when warmed up, then it's piston slap. If you have a warrenty, just take it to the dealer and demand it's fixed as it is a known fault, especially on '98 models, mind you the mileage may be a stumbling block. Good Luck.

Thumbs up

Wrexy

Thanks for the site....Thank God someone actually did that (record it), as it sounds nothing like mine. Just being paranoid, after all

Going to get it checked out whilst it's still under warranty anyway...It may not be PS, but better to be safe than sorry...

Cheers....Owen

Wink

A similar noise is when the timing belt is slightly loose,it will only need tensioned or replaced(better than slap!).
